<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A gunman who murdered nine people in the second deadliest school shooting in Canadian history is a transgender tearaway who also killed his mother and brother. <br>Transgender teen Jesse Van Rootselaar, who adopted the name Jesse Strang when he transitioned, opened fire in the library at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia on Tuesday afternoon.<br>The people killed at the school included a 39-year-old female educator, three 12-year-old female students, a 12-year-old male student and a 13 year-old male student. <br>One victim was found in a stairwell. The others were found in the school library, police said.<br>Prior to the school rampaged, 18-year-old Strang killed his mother Jennifer Strang, 39, and 11-year-old stepbrother Emmett at their home. A young female family member went to a neighbor, who called police. <br>With officers arriving at the school two minutes after the initial call, shots were fired in their direction.<br>Strang was found dead inside the school, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot injury. Officers recovered a long gun and a modified handgun.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">27 people were injured at the school Two wounded victims who were airlifted to hospitals are in “critical but stable” condition, police.<br>Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Wednesday said Strang was an18-year-old biological male, Jesse Van Rootselaar, who it is understood adopted his mother&#8217;s name, Strang, socially and at school after his transition. <br>Jesse who began identifying as female six years ago, aged 12. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">On one of those police call outs two years ago, legal firearms were seized from the home. However, the lawful owner got them back after petitioning to have them returned. The most recent police call to the residence was in the spring of 2025.<br>Strang was described as a &#8216;gun person&#8217; by police. Raised in a family that valued hunting, Strang learned to shoot rifles from a young age. Guns were kept in the home. However, other than the shooter, only one fatality and one of the survivors have been identified by their families.<br>12-year-old Kylie May was killed while Maya Gebala, also 12, who was shot in the neck and head is currently being treated in hospital. <br>Strang is also believed to have used she/her pronouns on his since-deleted social media accounts. <br>Locals said Strang was a &#8216;quiet kid&#8217; who was often seen &#8216;sitting by himself in the corner&#8217;. His mother Jennifer and younger brother were well known in the quiet rural community.</p>

Maya&#8217;s family said she was hit by shrapnel during the shooting.<br>Her mother Cia Edmonds said she was by her critically wounded daughter&#8217;s bedside after she was airlifted to Vancouver Children&#8217;s Hospital.<br>&#8216;Today started as any other. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">An emergency alert was issued to Tumbler Ridge residents around 1.20pm Tuesday, warning of an active shooter in the area.<br>An urgent alarm sounded in the hallways an hour later instructing students and staff to go on lockdown and barricade the doors.<br>Tumbler Ridge, a picturesque mountain valley town in the foothills of the Rockies about 736 miles north of Vancouver. Population 2,400.<br>The school, which with a combined population of 175 students in the high school and elementary school sections, will be closed for the rest of the week.<br></p>
