<p> A 35-year-old attorney, Chinette Gallichan, was shot dead outside the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) offices at the corner of Fox and Joubert streets in down town Johannesburg, South Africa. <br>The incident occurred in the Central business district around 9:00am on Monday, March 23, as Gallichan arrived for a matter at the CCMA. <br>The arbitration specialist, according to witnesses Pontsho Mahlangu, had just exited her vehicle when the assassin, described as a black male, approached and shot her at close range. <br>She had stepped out of her car heading for CCMA when the man drew close. &#8216;He shot her three times in the head&#8217; Mahlangu said when interviewed by local media.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size"><strong>The male assassin walked up to the victim as she stepped out of her car and shot her at point-blank range, a witness said. He then fled on foot before entering a waiting vehicle and escaping.</strong></p>

<p>The suspect fled the scene on foot before jumping into a waiting getaway vehicle.<br>Early indications from the scene suggest the attack may have been targeted, as none of her belongings were taken.<br>Gallichan, an expert in labor litigation for the mining giant Sibanye-Stillwater obtained her LLB from the University of South Africa (Unisa) and later completed a postgraduate diploma in labor law with distinction at the University of Johannesburg.<br>A social media post said Gallichan was a familiar presence in both legal and athletic circles, particularly at the CCMA, where she regularly handled cases related to unpaid wages and dismissals.<br>The morning she was murdered, Gallichan was scheduled to attend a CCMA hearing involving retrenched workers seeking compensation for unfair dismissal. <br>She had just arrived to represent the firm in a scheduled labor dispute case when she was gunned down.</p>

<p>Sibanye-Stillwater, one of the world’s largest primary producers of platinum, palladium, and gold, confirmed Gallichan was a valued member of their labor litigation department. The company has been embroiled in several high-stakes labor disputes in recent years, ranging from wage negotiations to mass retrenchments.<br>Records show that the mining sector in South Africa has a long and often violent history of labor unrest. In 2019, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) accused Sibanye-Stillwater of &#8220;sponsoring violence and intimidation&#8221; during a protracted strike, allegations the company denied.<br>Police who classified the death as homicide are hunting two suspects, while investigators work to establish the motive behind the killing.</p>
