<p>The American Sniper missed the mark when it came to his own accomplishments.<br />
Chris Kyle, the Navy SEAL known as the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history, lied about his accolades, after exaggerating his military record, documents showed.<br />
“I would end my career as a SEAL with two Silver Stars and five Bronze, all for valor,” Kyle wrote in his best-seller autobiography, “American Sniper.”<br />
But Navy documents published by The Intercept showed that Kyle actually only earned one Silver Star and three Bronze Stars with Valor.<br />
The former SEAL had been warned not to lie in his memoir, which was then adapted into the highest-grossing war film in U.S. history.</p>

<p>One of Kyle’s former commanders told the sharpshooter he should correct the claims before it was published, according to reports.“The SEAL leadership was aware of the embellishment, but didn’t want to correct the record because Kyle’s celebrity status reflected well on the command,” a former SEAL officer told the Intercept.<br />
Kyle’s embellishment directly violated the Stolen Valor Act, which makes it a crime to lie about military accomplishments for personal gain.<br />
The lie throws Kyle’s credibility into question, which had been shaky from the start.</p>

<p>In his book, Kyle claimed that he had 160 “confirmed kills,” but the self-reported statistic couldn&#8217;t be confirmed.The “American Sniper” had also lost a $1.8 million defamation lawsuit after former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura claimed Kyle lied about punching him in the face in a bar fight.</p>

<p>&#8220;A hero must be honorable, must have honor. And you can&#8217;t have honor if you&#8217;re a liar. There is no honor in lying,&#8221; Ventura said in 2015.<br />
Kyle left the Navy in 2009, 11 years after he first became a SEAL. Shortly after the success of his book, Kyle was killed by ex-marine Eddie Ray Routh in a double murder in 2012.</p>
