Wyoming County, New York, District Attorney Donald O&#8217;Green fought the defensemotion that the suspect was not mentally competent for trial said:<br />
&#8220;We have been convinced for months that the defendant was faking or maligning her so-called incompetency as a delay tactic to avoid taking responsibility for killing her husband,&#8221; but &#8220;Once the judge ruled that she was in fact competent she had no more legal maneuvers to avoid taking responsibility.&#8221;<br />
The jury convicted Charlene Mess of killing her husband and burying him a pile of manure. she showed no remorse and declined to speak as she faced her husband&#8217;s family as she was sentenced to 25 years in prison and five years of supervised release. In April, Mess accepted a plea deal of first degree manslaughter in the death of her husband, Doug Mess</p>
