<p>A 35-year-old Queens woman who terrorized her step children is to spend the next 15 years in jail. Sheetal Ranot beat and starved the eldest child, a her 12-year-old girl until she weighed just 58 pounds.<br />
Ranot, was sentenced, Friday to the long prison term for assaults on the child starting in 2012.<br />

Back in July, a Queens jury convicted Ranot of assaaulting the girl numerous times with broom handles and a rolling pin, as well as locking her inside her bedroom without food for long periods.</p>

<article>According to the criminal complaint, Ranot repeatedly hit her stepdaughter, locked her in her bedroom, and starved her for extended periods. She reportedly kicked little Maya Ranot in the face, as well as, repeatedly hitting her with a metal broom handle that left a cut near the girl’s knee and a cut on her wrist that was so deep her tendons were exposed, necessitating surgery.<br />

<p>In April, Sheetal hit the girl in the face with a wooden rolling pin, once again sending the child to the hospital. At that time, she weighed 58 pounds and was wearing dirty clothes. Over the next three weeks, the Ranots continued to abuse the unfortunate child. Doctors noticed various bruises, marks, and scars in different stages of healing.<br />

<p>An investigation was launched, City officials removed the little girl from her parents’ home and the “parents” were arrested shortly afterward.<br />
In a statement Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said:<br />
“Despite the bruising and scarring on her body which served as a silent testament to the violence and cruelty she purportedly endured, it is alleged that for a long time this emaciated child was fearful of disclosing the true nature of her injuries or those responsible for her suffering for fear that her younger step-siblings would be taken away by authorities and placed in foster care,” Brown said,<br />
“Fortunately, she found the courage to speak up.”“The defendant was the epitome of an evil stepmother,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.<br />
“Not only did she refuse to provide basic nourishment for the child, but the defendant also wantonly beat and abused the girl inflicting pain still evident by the scars that mark her body today.”</p>

he Department of Investigation found that the Administration for Children’s Services had failed to act on four previous abuse claims, starting with a school staffer’s report that a girl had complained about being hit. The report, released in May, does not name the Ranots, but several details match up with the case.<br />
Rajesh Ranot, the victim&#8217;s biological father, is still facing trial on charges of assault, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child. He trial is scheduled for a later date on charges of assault, unlawful imprisonment and child endangerment.</p>
