Neighbors said they heard 13 gunshots fired in one of the homes around 6:30 p.m. Responding police officers found a critically injured 36-year-old woman and her 6-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 5 and 9. One child was dead at the scene, the other two died in the hospital.</div>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Wechsler broke up with his girlfriend broke up with him about a month ago, plunging him into a deep depression, according to a close friend, Shirley Goodwin. Last month, he underwent a mental health evaluation after threatening to commit suicide.<br />
On Monday evening, Wechsler forced his way into the home and waited for the family to arrive before opening fire on them, Investigators said. The shooter himself was found unconscious with a self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday, police said. He died at the hospital.<br />
After a brief romantic relationship, the woman had asked Wechsler several times to stay away from her family, but on Monday he ambushed her with her three children as they got home and shot her leaving her with critical injuries. He also shot and killed her two sons, aged five and nine, and her six-year-old daughter. The killer then committed suicide.<br />
Police said Wechsler had asked to stop by the house to give the children Christmas gifts but the mother told him no after he repeatedly called and sought to visit.<br />
The woman, who tried in vain to pull her children to safety during the shooting, remained in critical but stable condition in the hospital Tuesday.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Wechsler who describes himself on his Facebook page as working at Blue Cross Blue Shield, also claimed had worked as a corrections officer in the past. But authorities said Wechsler had a criminal history, including an aggravated battery charge, harassment and stalking; none of those charges involved the family that were shot on Monday. In 2015 he was charged for assault after banging up his brother&#8217;s jaw, breaking two tooth. Ina 2002 incident, Wechsler pled guilty to stalking an ex-girlfriend. That lady provided police with emails together with direct threats from Wechsler where he wrote “Your [sic] gonna pay…” and “I hope you f***ing die.”<br />
Wechsler was booked without incident in that case, he allegedly was armed with a firearm which he fully intended to use at the time., <a class="" href="http://krqe.com/2016/12/06/police-confirm-3-children-killed-in-southeast-albuquerque-shooting-mother-in-critical-condition/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">KRQE </a>reported<br />
His friend Shirley Goodwin,who was among the last people to have talked to Wechsler before his death, said the breakup with his girlfriend plunged him into a deep depression. In November, he underwent a mental health evaluation after threatening to commit suicide.<br />
Goodwin said Wechsler came by her house the night before the shooting asking to borrow her Jeep, telling her he needed the vehicle to transport some gym equipment he was planning to sell. The Jeep would later be found at the crime scene.<br />
Before leaving her home, Goodwin said Wechsler turned around and told her he loved her.<br />
&#8216;This is a terrible tragedy and I think he just, he snapped. But he was very good to everyone, especially me,&#8217; said Goodwin. &#8216;I for one will miss him terribly and his family will miss him.&#8217;</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">According to Police Chief Eden the young mother, despite being severely injured, put up a hard fight to protect her children, the badly injured victim managed to pull one of her mortally wounded children out of the house, then crawled to a neighbor&#8217;s home for help.<br />
Despite her heroic efforts, one of the kids was pronounced dead at the scene and the other two succumbed to their wounds at the hospital.<br />
The mother remained in critical but stable condition Tuesday and investigators have not been able to talk to her. They said she&#8217;s the only surviving witness of the murders.<br />
The mother was alleged to have been injured as she struggled to get the children out of the home.<br />
Mayor Richard Berry described the deadly shooting as unimaginable and heartbreaking.<br />
&#8216;It&#8217;s hard not to be angry. It&#8217;s hard not to be frustrated,&#8217; he said during a news conference at police headquarters.<br />
Reacting to news of the shooting, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez condemned the senseless act: &#8216;I&#8217;m heartbroken over this horrible and senseless act of violence that has left all of us shaking our heads and asking &#8220;Why?&#8221;&#8216; Martinez said in a statement. &#8216;My heart and prayers go out to the family and the mother who is fighting for her life.&#8217;</p>
