Florida authorities said this is the second time Erin Piche-Pitts has lost a days-old baby resulting from an “co-sleeping” incident in the past 7 years. The latest incident occurred on October 6, 2016
Deputies in Polk County, Fla. say Piche-Pitts, found her newborn baby unresponsive after sleeping beside him. The Winter Haven mother has been arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter in the death of her second newborn baby.
ABC reports that the co-sleeping death occurred as the baby woke up in a bassinet and started to cry. Piche-Pitts removed the baby and placed him next to her, propped up by a pillow.

The mother allegedly placed the baby’s head in the crook of her arm, and fell asleep for approximately two and a half hours, awoke and discovered that the baby was unresponsive. The 18-day-old was pronounced dead at the Winter Haven Hospital.

To complicate matters, this is not the first time that Piche-Pitts has lost a newborn baby having suffered a similar loss of her then 13-day-old baby in 2009.
Furthermore, it is reported that Piche-Pitts reportedly knew the dangers of co-sleeping, having been counseled on the subject in both 2009 and 2016, through the Healthy Starts training program.
For the first infant loss she suffered in December of 2009, she fell asleep while breastfeeding her 13-day-old newborn. When she woke up, the baby was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the hospital.
The baby’s cause of death was ruled asphyxia “due to probable overlay and co-sleeping” and the manner of death was ruled an accident.
