31-year-old Collins pled guilty to sexually abusing a young family member from March 2010 to March 2014. He was arrested after the girl, who was 16 at the time, was taken to the hospital after complaining of stomach pains.
Doctors discovered she was pregnant and asked who the father is. The girl pointed to Collins, who fled from the hospital as officials notified police.
According to reports, the offspring of the rape, a girl, was stillborn, but DNA tests confirmed the fugitive Collins was the father of the child.
Authorities traced Collins to Oklahoma, where he was arrested about a month later.
Collins was convicted on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child and two counts of indecency with a child by contact and was sentenced to concurrent prison terms of 40, 20 and 20 years. He will serve at least 20 years in prison before he’s eligible for parole.
Before accepting the plea agreement, 54th State District Judge Matt Johnson asked if the plea bargain is satisfactory to the victim and her family. Prosecutor Christi Hunting Horse gestured to the family in the courtroom and assured the judge they are in agreement with the plea offer.
