<p>D’Elisa was due to face manslaughter charges after allegedly running a red light and crashing into Roberta Smargiassi, 33, as she was riding her moped last year.<br />
But Di Lello, 34, found him outside a cafe in Vasto, Italy and shot him, police say.<br />
After fatally shooting victim in the town of Vasto in the Abruzzo region, the killer calmly went to a local cemetery and placed the alleged murder weapon on his wife’s grave.<br />
Attorneys for Di Lello, a baker and semi professional footballer, say he was concerned Italy’s dysfunctional courts could let his wife’s killer off.<br />
“Fabio was in shock, he was depressed about the loss of his wife,” said Giovanni Cerella, according to the paper.<br />
“He thought that justice would not be done.<br />
“But I never got the impression that he was planning a vendetta like this.”</p>

<p>Gladiator’s main character Maximus Decimus Meridius is best known for the line: “Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife… and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next”.<br />
The 2000 hit film sees the character, played by Russell Crowe, rise through the gladiatorial ranks to avenge the murders of his family. Di Lello then went out and avenged what he saw as the wrongful death His wife Roberta who was killed on her Yamaha bike when D’Elisa allegedly drove his Fiat Punto through a red light, last summer.<br />
Di Lello did not resist arrest on Wednesday. He will likely face murder charges pending the completion of autopsy on the victim.</p>

Di Lello was tortured by the thought that justice might not be done and furious that D’Elisa had not apologised for what happened,<br />
his lawyers saidFabio was in shock, he was depressed about the loss of his wife,” said Giovanni Cerella, his lattorney said:. “He had no experience of handling firearms. But his psychological state was very fragile.”</p>
