<article id="ra-body">Iris Hernandez-Rivas was charged with assault and child abuse after admitting to authorities that she kicked her four-year-old daughter in the stomach, all because the toddler didn&#8217;t brush her teeth.<br />
The 20-year-old Gaithersburg, Maryland resident called police on Wednesday to report that she found her daughter, Nohely Alexandra Martinez Hernandez, unresponsive in the bathroom of their home, on Thursday, January 26.<br />
<a href="http://www.mymcpnews.com/2017/01/30/mother-charged-with-child-abuse-of-four-year-old-daughter/">Montgomery County police said </a>Hernandez-Rivas initially told authorities that her daughter went into the bathroom around 11 a.m. to take a shower and 15 minutes later she found the toddler face-down in the bathtub. Hernandez-Rivas said she waited about an hour before calling 911 to report the incident.<br />
The little girl was taken to the hospital in serious condition, and once there doctors determined that she had suffered head wounds and had bruises on her body. The girl later died at the Children&#8217;s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.<br />
The next day, Jan 27, police questioned Hernandez-Rivas again. She told investigators the multiple bruises found on her daughter&#8217;s bruises body were the result of her beating little Nohely Hernandez with a belt, a few days prior to her death.</p>

<p>She also admitted that the morning she found her daughter unresponsive, she had kicked her in the stomach because she was angry the little girl had not brushed her teeth.<br />
According to her claim, Nohely fell backwards and hit her head on the living room wall. She told police her daughter appeared lethargic, and went into the bathroom and turned on the shower.<br />
Hernandez-Rivas told police that she went to check on her daughter and found the little girl face down in the tub.<br />
Police arrested Hernandez-Rivas on Jan. 28. She was charged with first-degree assault and first-degree child abuse. She&#8217;s currently being held without bond, and could face more serious charges after a medical examiner determines the child&#8217;s cause of death.</p>
