A volunteer rescue team using sonar was able to locate the 20-year-old’s 2012 Ford Focus underwater near Parkville around 6 p.m. Friday.
“We just got the news — there’s a body in her car. There is somebody inside,” her mother, Liz Anderson, told the newspaper through her sobs.
A body was found inside the car and is believed to be the missing 20-year-old college student, Toni Anderson
“I just don’t know how she got there,” Liz Anderson said. “It doesn’t make sense, one bit.”
Anderson was last seen Jan. 15 after she left work around 4 a.m. She was pulled over by a North Kansas City police officer on Missouri 9 for an improper lane change. She told the cop she was almost out of gas, so he let her off with a warning and watched as she drove to a Quick Trip nearby,.
She texted her boyfriend at 4:42 a.m. saying “Omg just got pulled over again” and then stopped texting completely.
Officers do have surveillance video with Anderson in it but are not releasing it as it is apart of their investigation.
“KCPD has searched tirelessly for Toni Anderson, as we do in all our missing person cases,” Kansas City Police Capt. Stacey Graves said. “We have searched for her by land, air, sonar water. Our thoughts and prayers are with Toni Anderson’s family this evening.”
Graves added the body found inside the car has been taken to the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death and provide a positive identification.
