<p>A Dallas Fire Rescue paramedic wounded by a gunman while he treated a shooting victim earlier this week is awake and alert in the hospital, officials said.</p>

<article id="ra-body">William An, a 10-year veteran with the department, responded to a shooting police said was sparked by a dispute between roommates in the Dolphin Heights neighborhood around 11:30 a.m. Monday.<br />
The father-of-one immediately began administering care to the injured when a gunman, later identified as 36-year-old Derick Lamont Brown, opened fire.<br />
Dallas Fire-Rescue in a <a href="https://twitter.com/DallasFireRes_q/status/859858099347353600" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweet</a> Wednesday evening said the first responder was “awake, alert &; communicating with family, friends and his other firefighters.”</p>

<p>An was previously in critical but stable condition at Baylor University Medical Center. He was shot in the arm and leg, the wound to his leg broke his femur and struck his femoral artery while the wound to his arm damaged his radial artery.<br />
President of the Dallas Fire Fighters Association said the paramedic “lost an enormous amount of blood” and needed to be resuscitated in the emergency room,<a href="http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2017/05/01/report-active-shooter-in-dallas-wounds-one-officers-on-scene/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> CBS Dallas</a> reported.<br />
Jayne An expressed gratitude for the support of the community, after her husband was shot. The couple share a 3-year-old are expecting their second child.<br />
“By the grace of God, my husband is doing okay,” she said in a news release cited by <a href="http://www.kcentv.com/news/firefighter-awake-and-talking-after-being-shot-by-gunman/436105451" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">WFAA</a>. “We are greatly thankful for all the prayers sent our way. Please continue to pray for Will and keep him and our entire family in your prayers.<br />
“Special thanks again to the first responders who risk their lives daily .”</p>

<p>Police said Brown shot and killed his roommate, 67-year-old Arthur Riggins on Monday, prompting his neighbor to step outside to check on the situation. Brown shot the neighbor as well. The suspect continued firing as first responders arrived and continued to shoot even after he struck An. He retreated into a nearby home where he was later found dead.<br />
A police robot discovered the bodies of Brown, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and his roommate, Riggins. The neighbor injured in the confrontation was taken to the hospital and was recovering in intensive care.<br />
Brown a father of 18 children and worked as a janitor at Parkland Memorial Hospital. He is described as being mentally unstable with a lengthy criminal history, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance and DWI charges.</p>

<p>Brown went to jail in 2015 for being under the influence of a narcotic and for unlawful carry of a weapon by a license holder and was released two months ago.<br />
Dallas Fire-Rescue said they are thankful for all the support. Police said An will undergo additional procedures to address his injuries.</p>
