A video of an Ohio State University sophomore making a racist comment against interracial dating went viral on social media on Monday, prompting the school’s student body to condemn her.
The student, who has been identified as Katelyn Rust, recorded herself on video saying: ‘F*** yourself you’re hooking up with a black girl, that’s weird.’
‘That’s weird as f***. F*** you.’
Rust is believed to have recorded the video on a cell phone.
Another student at a different college, Aleigha Mason, who is black, posted the video on her Twitter feed, according to the student-run news site The Tab.
Mason, a freshman at Miami University (Ohio) identified the girl in the video as Rust.

She told The Lantern that Rust was reacting to seeing her ex-boyfriend and Mason dancing together.
‘I didn’t even know she existed until today. I danced with her ex-boyfriend and for what I understand that’s why she made that video,’ Mason told The Lantern.
‘I just want her to understand that her comments are hurtful and not okay.’
‘It’s crazy that racism still exists here at Ohio State,’ Mason tweeted in the original post with the video attached.
‘[I] can’t believe the color of my skin is “weird”.’
It is not clear how Mason obtained the video, though it is obvious the clip was intended to be seen by Rust’s ex-boyfriend.
Hours later, after the tweet had gone viral, Mason deleted the video from her Twitter account.
Mason posted a statement on Twitter saying that she decided to remove the video ‘because at the end of the day [Katelyn Rust] is a human too even though she thinks I am less than that.’

‘We shouldn’t act as if my tweet never existed, this happens everywhere and there is no excuse.’
Rust on Monday released a statement to The Lantern in which she apologized for the video.
‘First and foremost racism is wrong,’ she said.
‘I, in no way, think that anyone is less of a person than anyone else because of their skin color, nationality, religion, sexual preference or otherwise and sincerely apologize for all the words in this twitter video.’
After indicating that she had personally apologized to Mason, she stated ‘I say in the strongest possible terms that racism is despicable and I apologize for any hurt or pain this tweet caused this young woman or anyone else. I sincerely ask for forgiveness from this young women (sic), the OSU student body, faculty and alumni family.”
Some Twitter users who saw the video speculated that Rust may have been intoxicated when she recorded the message.
Rust is a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
The Greek organization on campus was compelled to make a statement denouncing Rust.
‘We were made aware of the tweet today,’ Ohio State Pi Beta Phi President Tricia Gore said.
‘The content in the video is in no way aligned with Pi Beta Phi’s values. We are currently working through our member accountability process.’
OSU’s student government also put out a statement in response to the video.
‘This type of behavior & rhetoric is unacceptable,’ Sophie Chang, OSU’s Undergraduate Student Government vice president, said.
