Mark Schreiber, whose troubling medical record in south Florida dates back 19 years agreed to a 44 month prison term for two counts of practicing medicine without a license, according to a plea deal made last week.
The 62-year-old former physician will also be ordered to pay $145,000 in restitution for the faulty butt implant once he’s released from custody, the Miami Herald reports.
Schreiber was first placed on probation by the state’s health department in 1998 after he botched a penis enlargement surgery and facelift that killed a 51-year-old patient. Four years later, a 73-year-old man died of a heart attack two days after a neck lift at his office.
In 2005, his medical license was suspended after a woman complained he touched her inappropriately during a procedure. Schreiber continued to practice until he was forced to give up his license a year later. His licence to practice medicine was revoked in 2008,
Schreiber was later arrested and agreed to a two-year prison sentence for illegally operating on four women. He was also sued by a woman and her husband who said his botched surgery a decade earlier left her with severe scars; a jury awarded her $7.7 million to Cheryl and Randolph Volenec last year.
Cheryl and Randolph Volenec, won $7.7million in a lawsuit against Mark Screiber and Bethesda Memorial Hospital for pain and disfigurement Cheyrl endured when she was treated there 10 years earlier for a botched plastic surgery, performed by Schreiber
Prosecutors said Schreiber continued to secretly practice plastic surgery following his release from prison in 2010.
He was also charged in Broward County with drug possession and later took a plea deal, the Herald reports.
Under the plea deal made last week in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, Schreiber was charged for a faulty Brazilian butt lift surgery at the infamous Bella Beauty Spa. The spa is shut down and the owner, Maribel Jimenez, was recently sentenced to six years in federal prison for injecting hundreds of women with illegal and misbranded silicone imported from Colombia with disastrous consequences.
The West Miami-Dade clinic where Schreiber practiced his unlicensed plastic surgery was owned by Maribel Jimenez, who was recently sentenced to six years in federal prison for injecting hundreds of women with illegal silicone imported from Colombia.
In a separate civil suit, a Miami-Dade judge in April ordered spa owner, Maribel Jimenez, 48, and Schreiber to pay $818,000 in damages to 23-year-old Stephanie Rodriguez after Schreiber used an anesthesia cocktail consisting of Benadryl, Xanax and Lorzapem during the Brazilian lift procedure which sent Rodreguez to a Coral Gables hospital, diagnosed with a drug overdose, cellulitis on her right buttocks and an infected ulcer. She had sores all over her body and underwent a blood transfusion and medical bills around $205,000.permanent injuries during the surgery.
According to the Miami Herald Schreiber was charged criminally and will need to recoup the additional $145,000 to rodriguez.
Schreiber also pled guilty in a separate penis enlargement case. He operated on a man who had received a botched “penis filler” surgery from another suspected illegal doctor. The patient discovered his penis “mutilated,” according to court documents, after regaining consciousness at home following the surgery. Police said the victim then sent photos of his genitals to Schreiber, who allegedly made a startling recommendation to the patient.
“At that point, rather than referring that gentleman to a hospital … he recommends to take two popsicle sticks and tie his penis together and wait for swelling to go down,” a Miami-Dade prosecutor during a hearing last year.
