<p>34-year-old Pierce County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy Daniel McCartney, of Yelm, was shot and killed while responding to a break-in Sunday at a mobile home in Spanaway. He was dispatched around 11.30pm and made a &#8216;shots fired&#8217; call over his radio shortly after arriving.<br />
According to charging papers, Troyer dropped Pawul and another man, 35-year-old Henry Carden, and the men robbed residents of a mobile home allegedly frequented by drug dealers and users.</p>

<p>McCartney was dispatched around 11.24pm to the mobile home near 45th Avenue Court East and 200th Street after the residents reporter the break in, according to <a class="" href="http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/crime/article194263594.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The News Tribune</a>.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Shortly after arriving, he made a &#8216;shots fired&#8217; call over his radio, his last transmission. Deputies found McCartney with a fatal gunshot wound in the neck.<br />
Police believe Pawul fled and the deputy ran after him, after which there was a gun battle and McCartney was hit. Nearby they found Carden with several gunshot wounds, including a self-inflicted fatal wound to his head.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Deputies found and interviewed Troyer, who said she dropped Carden and Pawul off near the mobile home so they could buy a car, and then left.<br />
Texts messages found on Pawul&#8217;s phone showed he had texted Troyer, saying he&#8217;d been hiding in a garbage can and wanted her to come pick him up.<br />
Troyer told him that authorities believed McCartney shot Carden and that Pawul killed the deputy.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Deputy McCartney was a US Navy veteran who served from 2004 to 2008 and received several medals including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the NATO Medal.<br />
He had served with the Pierce County Sheriff&#8217;s Department for three years and had previously served with the Hoquiam Police Department for six years.<br />
He is survived by his wife and three sons, aged four, six, and nine years old.</p>
