<p class="imageCaption">A man has been arrested after his girlfriend&#8217;s body was found wrapped in plastic in a home southwest of Detroit, Michigan.<br />
Prosecutors said Jeffrey Thomas, 50, was charged Tuesday with concealing the death of an individual. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Jennifer Butkowski.<br />
Butkowski and Thomas were in a relationship and lived together in a home in Rockwood, Michigan.<br />

During his arraignment Tuesday Thomas was questioned by Judge James Kersten about his employment, to which he replied &#8220;U.S. Steel.&#8221;<br />
&#8220;I last worked two weeks ago when all this started coming about,&#8221; Thomas told the judge.<br />
&#8220;I will admit there were about three or four days there I was in funk,&#8221; Thomas continued. &#8220;All I did was drink. I was upset with myself missing the one person I truly loved.&#8221;<br />
The remains of mother-of-one, Jennifer Ann Butkowski [left], was discovered when police were called to the house early Sunday morning. Upon arrival, they found a disoriented Thomas, who had blood on his hands, arms and legs, according to <a class="" href="http://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/wayne-county/2018/01/16/man-charged-concealing-girlfriends-death/1036778001/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">The Detroit News</a>.<br />
Police said Thomas jumped from an upper-floor window at the Rockwood home shortly after midnight and told officers a gunman was inside, holding children as hostages.<br />
No gunman or children were found inside, however.<br />
When authorities entered the house, they smelled a foul odor. Going deeper into the house, they discovered Butkowski&#8217;s body, which had been wrapped in plastic. The windows in the bedroom were also open despite sub-freezing temperatures.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Police said that Butkowski had been dead for up to a month, but that there were no obvious signs of trauma on her body, <a class="" href="https://www.wxyz.com/news/region/monroe-county/rockwood-police-say-man-hid-girlfriends-dead-body-for-up-to-a-month" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">WXYZ</a> reported.<br />
Rockwood Police Chief Randy Krause said an autopsy will determine the cause of death. The case is being treated as a homicide.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Police said that it was unclear why the scantily-clad Thomas had jumped out the window. He was arrested at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital, the <a class="" href="http://www.thenewsherald.com/news/man-charged-for-concealing-girlfriend-s-body-for-a-month/article_891ccd4b-3c07-581a-ba4a-700702b28686.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">News-Herald</a> said.<br />
&#8216;He tried to conceal the death by wrapping her in plastic. We don&#8217;t know what his intentions were to do with the body, but that is a crime and we are holding him on that,&#8217; Krause said, according to WXYZ.<br />
Thomas and Butkowski were said to have moved to Rockwood from another state less than two months ago. Police confirmed her identity through Facebook and her tattoos.<br />
&#8220;The police officer was able to find Jennifer Butkowski&#8217;s Facebook page and one of the photos was Jennifer&#8217;s midsection and the star tattoo was the same,&#8221; said Det. Sgt. Steven Mercure.<br />
Police say as the investigation continues it&#8217;s still unclear how the victim died because Thomas refuses to answer questions. Her body was so badly decomposed that the pathologist continues to search for answers.<br />
Jennifer is survived by her son Dylan Pauley, her parents Richard and Karen Butkowski and sister Ashly Butkowski.<br />
According to a <a href="http://www.fox2detroit.com/news/local-news/man-charged-with-keeping-dead-girlfriend-in-plastic-inside-rockwood-home#/">Fox2 report</a>, investigators said the fact that Thomas is not from Michigan and because his family lives out of state became a factor in setting his bond at $200,000.<br />
&#8220;I do believe you are a flight risk,&#8221; said Judge Kersten. &#8220;Bond is $200,000.&#8221;<br />
The next court date for Thomas is Jan. 30.<br />
If convicted of concealing Butkowski&#8217;s death, Thomas could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.</p>
