<p>A man accused of murdering a pair of deputies during a spree of violence in 2014 laughed through the opening day of his trial and vowed to escape prison to kill again.<br />
“I wish I could have killed more of those motherf&#8212;&#8211;s. I will break out soon, and I will kill more,” Luis Bracamontes unapologetically told a judge Tuesday.<br />
The 37-year-old defendant added that there’s no need for the trial to continue, given he has repeatedly admitted to murdering Sacramento Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Oliver and Placer Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Davis Jr. during a violent tear, which began in a Motel 6 parking lot near the Arden Fair Mall, the <a href="http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article194874024.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sacramento Bee</a> reported.<br />
“There was no need to prove all this s&#8212;,” he told Judge Steve White. “I don’t f&#8212;ing regret that s&#8212;. The only thing I f&#8212;ing regret is I only killed two.”<br />
White ruled the trial would continue, though he did have to dismiss the jury during one of Bracamontes’ outbursts.</p>

<p>His attorney, Jeffrey Barbour, is not trying to prove Bracamontes’ innocence. He’s instead arguing that his client has mental health issues and should spend his life behind bars rather than be handed the death penalty.<br />
“We are not contesting many of these charges,” he said. “Mr. Bracamontes is responsible for the death of Deputy Danny Oliver and the death of Detective Michael Davis. He shot them both.”<br />
He noted Bracamontes was high on methamphetamine at the time, a factor that could have made him paranoid and agitated. The defendant then tried kill himself and responding officers by turning on a gas stove at the home he was holed up in ahead of his surrender.<br />
That outburst led to Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White briefly removing the jury, then warning Bracamontes.<br />
Unimpressed, the judge told the defendant: “You will not disrupt this trial, you will not speak out,” White told him.<br />
“If you do, you will be removed from the courtroom.”</p>

<p>Defense attorneys Barbour, and Norm Dawson had questioned Bracamontes’ sanity, then asked the judge to reconsider his preliminary finding that Bracamontes is mentally competent to stand trial.<br />
“Your motion is denied,” Judge White told public defender Jeffrey Barbour. He then had the jury come back in and instructed them not to pay any attention to what had happened, allowing the prosecution to conclude their opening statements.<br />
When Barbour and Dawson, who conceded his client killed both deputies then renewed their efforts, asking the judge outside the presence of the jury if they could enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity &#8211; “We believe Mr. Bracamontes’ outbursts, his laughter, are a function of his mental illness”.<br />
But the judge was having none of it, noting that the issue already had been litigated in previous hearings and that if Bracamontes chooses not to help his lawyers that’s up to him. “He is not incompetent to stand trial,” White declared.<br />
Instead the defense urged the jurors to listen to evidence presented that may be of use in the penalty phase, when they will have to choose between the death penalty or life in prison if he is convicted.</p>

<article>Bracamontes and his wife, Janelle Marquez Monroy, led police on a six-hour chase through Placer County and into Auburn, where the deadly spree came to a violent end, <a href="http://www.kcra.com/article/suspect-in-norcal-deputies-killings-laughs-in-court-during-start-of-trial-yells-i-will-kill-more/15243041" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KCRA</a> reported, at a parking lot and the death of the two law enforcement officers<br />
He’s charged with killing both deputies, shooting a motorist in the head to steal his car and wounding another Placer County deputy. His 41-year-old wife, who is an American citizen, is accused of assisting Bracamontes and faces life in prison.</p>

<p>Bracamontes has repeatedly proclaimed his guilt and has requested the death penalty at past court hearings, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/california-suspect-calls-slain-deputys-partner-coward-52387482" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC News</a> reported. He has also threatened to kill his attorneys, more deputies and had to be restrained upon learning he could not fire his lawyers.</p>
