Joseph Haynes [left], was struck once in the abdomen during the fight that began as an early afternoon hearing concluded in a domestic relations courtroom in Columbus, said Rick Minerd, investigations chief with the Franklin County Sheriff&#8217;s Office. The boy died about 30 minutes later at a nearby downtown hospital.<br />
Events unfolded as a judge wrapped up a hearing involving a firearms charge against the boy and an electronic monitoring device the court assigned him earlier in the case, Minerd said.<br />
Franklin County Sheriff&#8217;s Office did not identify the deputy, saying the investigation is ongoing&#8217;.<br />
Joseph Haynes was shot dead inside of a Columbus courtroom on January 17. <a href="http://abc6onyourside.com/news/local/crews-respond-to-reported-shooting-at-courthouse-downtown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC Columbus</a> reports that Haynes was on the fifth floor in the building’s juvenile courtroom at the time of the shooting. Haynes was shot in the abdomen, according to Chief Minerd.<br />
At some point as the hearing was concluding, there was an altercation that ensued involving the deputy and some of the family members,&#8217; Minerd said.<br />
He added later the boy also was involved.<br />
The deputy was knocked to the ground and fired a shot, he said.<br />
The Joey Haynes was rushed to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. It’s not clear if the gun went off by accident or was deliberate.<br />
The deputy was also rushed to Grant Medical Center. His condition is unknown although his injuries were not considered life-threatening.</p>

<p>Giving the family&#8217;s account of how events unfolded, the teen&#8217;s grandmother, Geraldine Haynes, said the altercation started when the deputy and the Joey&#8217;s mother got into an argument as the family was leaving toward the end of the hearing.<br />
The teen&#8217;s mother was ordered out of the courtroom and the deputy didn&#8217;t give the mother enough time to gather her belongings, his grandmother said.<br />
Joey then got involved: &#8220;Joey went over, grabbed him by his shoulders and the guy slung him around and slung Joey to the ground. And then he got on top of Joey &#8230; and then Joey&#8217;s hands were up in the air like that and the cop with his hand down by his side and the gun went off, he pulled the trigger on my grandson,&#8221; Geraldine Haynes, said</p>

<p>Local Columbus station <a href="https://www.10tv.com/article/teen-defendant-dead-after-deputy-involved-shooting-inside-franklin-county-courtroom" target="_blank" rel="noopener">10TV</a> reports that Haynes was in court to answer to charges of aggravated menacing. The station says that in November 2017, Haynes pointed a handgun at two people and threatened to shoot them. That gun allegedly, belongs to his mother.<br />
Prior to that arrest, Haynes was labeled a juvenile delinquent and had been placed on probation. In addition, Haynes had been forced to wear an electric monitoring bracelet. That punishment stemmed from an incident where Haynes was found “with a concealed weapon.”<br />
On another occasion in 2016, Haynes was arrested for choking his mother in a domestic dispute. Those charges were subsequently dropped at the request of his mother.<br />
On his Facebook page, Haynes went by the moniker “Joey Fuzz,” some refer to him as “Lil Joey Fuzz.” Haynes said on that page that he is from South Side, Ohio, and at the time of his death was living in Hilltop. Haynes writes in his intro section, “Free my BigBro Mikey &; It’s Stack or Starve. Secure the bag.”</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">The sheriff&#8217;s office extended condolences to the Hayes family and wished the injured deputy a quick recovery.<br />
Minerd didn&#8217;t identify the deputy, saying the investigation is ongoing. The deputy also was injured and was being treated at a hospital, but that he wasn&#8217;t shot, Minerd said.<br />
Minerd said the sheriff&#8217;s office extends its condolences to the family of Haynes and wishes the injured deputy a quick recovery. He wouldn&#8217;t speculate on what exactly happened.<br />
&#8216;That&#8217;s a very busy courtroom, very emotional floor here in the courthouse,&#8217; Minerd said.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">The sheriff&#8217;s office immediately requested crime scene assistance from the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and two employees of the agency were assigned, records show.<br />
Franklin County Commissioner John O&#8217;Grady told the Columbus Dispatch that public safety is always an issue and commissioners would &#8216;certainly be willing&#8217; to discuss added juvenile court security with court personnel.</p>
