A Texas businesswoman running for the US Congress is facing backlash after releasing a new campaign advertisement showing her firing a rifle, just 24 hours after the mass shooting at a Florida high school that left 17 dead.
The central message of the commercial is that conservative activist and Republican fundraiser Kathaleen Wall is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, and that despite being a soft-spoken woman, she is committed to defending her would-be constituents’ right to bear arms.
Wall is among around 10 Republicans vying to replace retiring Congressman Ted Poe, who represents Texas’ 2nd Congressional District, which encompasses much of northern and western Houston.

In the ad, a narrator says Wall’s father taught her how to shoot a gun in her youth. The 30-second ad, which was first reported on by KPRC, begins with Wall holding a rifle in her well-manicured hands, with a male narrator going through the steps of firing a gun: ‘ready, aim, breath in, breath out, gently squeeze trigger and fire.’
The GOP candidate takes a shot and flinches from the recoil in slow motion, after which the narrator chimes in again, accompanied by a strumming guitar: ‘that is how Kathaleen Wall’s daddy taught her to shoot growing up on her Texas farm. It’s a part of Kathaleen’s life.’

The video then shows Wall strolling through the woods, going for a drive with her dog and riding on the back of a white horse.
The ad culminates with Wall carrying the rifle on her shoulder and then firing the weapon again, as the male narrator says off-screen: ‘if anyone thinks a nice lady with a soft voice might naturally be soft on Second Amendment, then they are making a big, big mistake.’

One Twitter user asked: ‘You ran TV ads shooting a gun the day after 17 children got murdered by a guy with a gun. Beyond poor taste. Simply reprehensible to say the least. I grew up in Houston and I can assure you’ll I’ll do everything possible to make sure you don’t get a seat.’
Another user berated wall for the poor timing of her new ad: ‘it it was ‘completely inappropriate today or any day.’
A third person criticized the ad as ‘insensitive’ and wondered, ‘What was she thinking?’
Wall’s Facebook page also was quickly inundated with strongly worded comments concerning the controversial TV spot.

On the day of the nation’s latest school shooting rampage, Wall released a statement that read: ‘Our family’s prayers are with the families and friends of the victims of today’s horrific attacks in Parkland, Florida. I cannot begin to understand the pain that was caused by the evil actions we saw today.
‘While dark moments like these cause pain and suffering, we all can be inspired by the heroic actions displayed in the face of danger by students, teachers, and first responders who selflessly risked their own safety to help in this crisis.’
Two days earlier, she tweeted: ‘I am a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association (NRA). You can count on me to stand up, protect, and defend our constitutional right to own a firearm.’
Politics and power make for strange bed fellows; Wall aims and shoots in her controversial campaign ad
The National Rifle Association has given Wall an ‘A’ rating, according to the gun lobby’s website.
Wall and her husband, Holloway Frost, have long donated generously to Republican candidates and causes, including $1million-plus during the 2016 election cycle.
Last month, Wall received a rare endorsement from Gov. Greg Abbott, who lauded her as a ‘conservative champion.’
