<p class="zn-body__paragraph speakable">The SUV packed with undocumented immigrants that flipped and crashed Sunday is believed to have been part of a &#8216;smuggling event&#8217;.<br />
US Border Patrol said three cars were allegedly involved in smuggling immigrants who they believe had been living in the country illegally.<br />
The unidentified driver of the crashed vehicle and one passenger are believed to be US citizens and are in custody, while the other 12 passengers &#8211; five of whom died &#8211; have been identified as undocumented.<br />
Before the crash, a Border Patrol agent noticed three vehicles traveling in tandem around 11am in South Texas.<br />
The agent stopped one vehicle and another agent stopped the other, where multiple arrests were made from both.<br />
However, the third vehicle,- a black Chevrolet SUV, kept going, sparking a car chase that ended in the fatal crash, killing five.<cite class="el-editorial-source"><br />

<div class="zn-body__paragraph speakable">Describing the origin of the chase, US Customs and Border Protection agents said the incident started after a Border Patrol agent in Carrizo Springs suspected smuggling when he saw a trio of vehicles pass him on a rural highway around 11 a.m.<br />
The agent stopped one vehicle and radioed a description of the other vehicles to other agents.<br />
A second agent stopped the second vehicle and several people were arrested from those two vehicles, but the third vehicle didn&#8217;t stop when an agent tried to pull it over.<br />
A Dimmitt County Sheriff&#8217;s deputy took over the chase just west of Big Wells. Eventually, the vehicle, which was traveling around 100 mph, lost control, ran off the roadway before flipping several times, landing on the highway, according to Dimmit County Sheriff, Marion Boyd.</p>

<div class="zn-body__paragraph">Boyd said there were 14 people in the vehicle that flipped. Authorities believe the driver and one passenger are US citizens.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">Local law enforcement officers were familiar with the driver, who was in the area last week to either pick up undocumented immigrants or to scout, the sheriff said.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">The other 12 passengers were undocumented immigrants, Boyd said.</div>
<div class="zn-body__paragraph">Boyd said the victims were taken to hospitals. Six patients were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio, Lt. Edwin Roberts said.</div>

<div class="zn-body__paragraph">&#8220;I think we need a wall, in my opinion,&#8221; he said, voicing support for President Donald Trump&#8217;s highly controversial proposal to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/05/politics/donald-trump-border-wall-close-country-remark/index.html">construct a wall</a> along the border with Mexico.: &#8220;If it can be built, I think it needs to be built. But along with that, there needs to be cameras. There needs to be sensors,&#8221; Boyd added.</div>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">The sheriff said the SUV lost control while traveling at more than 100 mph and overturned on Texas Highway 85, ejecting those inside.<br />
The driver was known to authorities, and had been seen in the area &#8216;last week,&#8217; either scouting the area or looking for immigrants to smuggle, police said.<br />
Fourteen people were inside, including the driver and passenger. Four were pronounced dead at the scene midday Sunday. A fifth person died at a hospital.<br />
The driver was rushed to a hospital and the passenger is currently in custody.<br />
Most of the crash victims were believed to be living in the country without legal permission.<br />
Sheriff Boyd credited &#8216;good police work&#8217; for the reason why deputies started pursuing the vehicle adding that Boyd said human smuggling was a &#8216;real problem&#8217; in the area.<br />
Some injured were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles northeast.<br />
He added such chases, not the crash, happened almost every day.<br />
Authorities have not released the names of those arrested or deceased as of Monday morning.</p>
