A member of the Coast Guard killed his wife and their seven-year-old son before critically wounding their eight-year-old daughter and turning the gun on himself, officials have said.
Miami-Dade police and Coast Guard officials say Petty Officer First Class John Presnar, 44, fatally shot his 39-year-old wife Gretchen early Sunday at their Florida home in Southwest Miami-Dade, Florida.
He then shot their children, whose names have not been released, and then himself, according to Local 10 News.
When officers arrived, they found the bodies and the wounded girl inside.
Presnar had served in the Coast Guard since 2001 as an electronics technician.
In a statement, the Coast Guard said it ‘is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family members’.
‘We continue to pray and offer the full support of the Coast Guard to the young child fighting for her life,’ the statement read.
