<p>Dallas Police say Joshua Brown was shot dead by three Louisiana men who were allegedly trying to buy drugs off him just days after he testified in the trial that ultimately ended in the murder conviction of a Dallas police officer Amber Guyger&#8217;s trial.<br />
<span style="color: var(--color-text);">Dallas Police Assistant Chief Avery Moore announced Tuesday that suspects </span>Thaddeous Charles Green, 22, Michael Diaz Mitchell, 32, and Jacquerious Mitchell, 20, will face capital murder charges in last Friday&#8217;s killing of the 28-year-old in Dallas, Texas.<br />
The three men had allegedly come to Dallas from Alexandria, Louisiana which is 330 miles away, to buy marijuana from Brown.<br />
Brown has previously served time for a drug and firearms conviction, records showed.<br />
Only one of the men, Jacquerious, is currently in police custody.<br />
He is in hospital in a &#8216;critical condition&#8217; after claiming to have been shot by Brown. The other two suspects, Green and Michael, remain on the run and are believed to be back in their home state of Louisiana.<br />
Brown&#8217;s death came two days after a jury sentenced Guyger to 10 years in prison for killing her upstairs neighbor, Botham Jean, in September 2018.<br />
Since news of Brown&#8217;s murder broke, speculation has been rife about the &#8216;suspicious&#8217; timing of his death.<br />
Many have suggested the Dallas Police Department may have had a hand in Brown&#8217;s murder.<br />
Assistant Chief Avery Moore addressing these rumors on Tuesday said, despite widespread speculation, the killing was not tied in any way to Brown testifying at Guyger&#8217;s murder trial.</p>

</span><span style="color: var(--color-text);">The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. were among those who had requested an independent investigation into Brown&#8217;s death, calling it &#8216;deeply alarming and highly suspicious&#8217;.<br />
</span><span style="color: var(--color-text);">At a press conference on Tuesday, police said the three suspects in Brown&#8217;s murder drove to meet him outside a Dallas apartment block last Friday night to buy drugs from him.</span></p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Green had allegedly been the one to contact Brown about the drugs but police said a physical altercation broke out between them when they met.<br />
Jacquerious told investigators that he got out of the car when the fight broke out but he was shot in the chest by Brown.<br />
He said Green retaliated and allegedly shot Brown twice in the lower body.<br />
Police said the three men then fled the scene in their car. Michael, who was the driver, allegedly dropped Green at an unknown location before rushing Jacquerious to hospital to be treated for his gunshot wound.<br />
Police said Michael then also fled. Green allegedly took Brown&#8217;s backpack and gun from the scene of the shooting.</p>

<p>Investigators said they received multiple tips to search Brown&#8217;s apartment where they uncovered 12 pounds of marijuana and about $4,000 in cash.<br />
Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots and saw a silver sedan speeding out of the apartment complex&#8217;s parking lot shortly after the shooting.<br />
Police said they have since learned a silver car believed to be driven by the suspects was rented in Alexandria, Louisiana on Friday. The getaway vehicle allegedly, was returned on Sunday.<br />
The Dallas Police Department came in for some heavy criticism over their handling of the Guyger case with many claiming the investigation was corrupt. Consequently the DPD have vowed to be &#8216;transparent&#8217; about Brown&#8217;s case and provide updates when available.<br />
During the trial, jurors were shown incriminating footage of the off duty officer who had just shot an innocent man using her cellphone after the shooting instead of giving aid, body cameras being turned off and evidence that text messages had been deleted off her phone.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Brown&#8217;s family issued a statement via their attorney Lee Merritt calling for the Dallas Police Department to turn over the investigation to an alternate agency.<br />
&#8216;This family and their representatives have consciously avoided speculating about law enforcement involvement in this tragedy, however, due to the proximity of this murder with the trial of Amber Guyger &#8211; rumors abound.<br />
&#8216;It will be nearly impossible to conduct a reliable investigation in a climate where the investigating agency has been implicated in the murder itself.<br />
&#8216;That implication naturally stems from a trial where a Dallas Police officer was convicted of murder and other DPD officers were shown to have participated in condemnable behavior in destroying evidence and interfering with the investigation.&#8217;<br />
Merritt had earlier said Brown was due to be one of the first witnesses to testify in an upcoming wrongful death lawsuit brought against the Dallas Police Department by Jean&#8217;s family.<br />
Jean&#8217;s family is suing the city after claiming that police failed to properly train Guyger before she shot him dead in his own apartment.<br />
Merritt said he was reluctant to testify during Guyger&#8217;s high-profile trial and had repeatedly expressed concerns for his safety.<br />
Brown had narrowly escaped death in November last year following a shooting outside a Dallas nightclub. He was shot in the foot and his 25-year-old friend was killed.<br />
Merritt has previously said Brown feared the people behind the shooting continued to mean him harm.<br />
He said Brown fled Texas for California to avoid testifying at Guyger&#8217;s trial.<br />
Merritt said Brown was in California on the first of Guyger&#8217;s trial but that prosecutors allegedly threatened to issue a warrant for his arrest if he didn&#8217;t show up the following day.<br />
&#8216;He got on a plane and came straight from the airport to the courthouse,&#8217; Merritt said. &#8216;I believe he met with the judge in her chambers (on the record) and reiterated his concern about testifying.&#8217;</p>

Brown started crying when he was asked about the victim.<br />
He said he had met Jean for the first time on the day he was killed when police knocked on both of their doors about a noise complaint, even though there wasn&#8217;t anything loud going on in their apartments.<br />
Brown said he thought it might have been because both he and Jean smoked marijuana and the smell sometimes drifted into the hallway.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Merritt pointed out that the court has mechanisms to limit the exposure of witnesses and more should have been done to protect Brown given his concerns.<br />
&#8216;(The court) took steps to cut off cameras and instruct media not to report on an undercover cop that testified in Guyger&#8217;s trial,&#8217; Merritt said.<br />
&#8216;Why weren&#8217;t the same measures taken to protect Joshua Brown? Brown&#8217;s testimony was powerful but it was also duplicative. Nothing he testified to couldn&#8217;t have been brought in by other witnesses.<br />
&#8216;It wasn&#8217;t worth his life.&#8217;<br />
Merritt has previously called Brown&#8217;s death an &#8216;assassination&#8217;.<br />
He has also refused to rule out that police were somehow involved in the shooting that took Brown&#8217;s life.<br />
&#8216;I am not saying that law enforcement played a role in the murder of Joshua Brown. I am saying that the possibility of law enforcement involvement cannot be ruled out at this point,&#8217; he said.<br />
&#8216;Anyone who is murdered days after testifying in a murder trial naturally implicates the person or persons he testified against in the murder. There are no suspects and no leads currently in the murder of Joshua Brown. That means investigators are responsible for turning over every stone<br />
<span style="color: var(--color-text);">&#8216;Moreover, the people responsible for investigating this case can not be the same people implicated by the proximity to the trial. In other words, Dallas PD should not be investigating this murder. The case should be turned over to an outside agency like the sheriff&#8217;s department, FBI or DOJ.&#8217;</span></p>

In a search of his apartment, officers found 12 pounds of marijuana, 149 grams of THC cartridges and more than $4,000 in cash, police said.<br />
“The rumors shared by community leaders that Mr. Brown’s death was related to the Amber Guyger trial and that DPD was responsible are false,&#8221; police tweeted.<br />
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson issued a statement in which he expressed thanks to investigators.<br />
&#8220;I am grateful that our detectives have taken the initial steps necessary to bring closure to this case,&#8221; he said.<br />
&#8220;I want to thank everyone who demonstrated patience and responsibly reserved their judgment while the Dallas Police Department gathered the facts regarding the death of Joshua Brown. I urge anyone with additional information about this case to come forward.&#8221;<br />
However, an attorney for Brown’s family is calling for an outside investigation into his killing.<br />
Attorney Lee Merritt says &#8220;a cloud of suspicion&#8221; sits over Brown’s death.<br />
He says an agency other the Dallas Police Department should investigate Brown&#8217;s death so the findings will be viewed as &#8220;authentic and reliable.&#8221;<br />
On Tuesday, Merritt released a statement on behalf of the Brown family calling for the Dallas Police Department to turn the investigation over to another agency.<br />
&#8220;This family and their representatives have consciously avoided speculating about law enforcement involvement in this tragedy, however, due to the proximity of this murder with the trial of Amber Guyger — rumors abound,&#8221; the statement said, in part. &#8220;A cloud of suspicion will rest over this case until steps are taken to ensure the trustworthiness of the process.&#8221;</p>
