A 911 call from a kidnap victim on Friday led to the uncovering of a case of homicide in Jefferson County, Alabama hours later.
At the caller’s direction, deputies found the body of a woman who had been shot dead and dumped behind a hospital. The grisly discovery was made early Saturday morning in the wooded area off Medical Park Drive East.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the shooting victim as 31-year-old Kellie Ann Hughes.
The 911 caller told deputies on Friday evening she was being held against her will at an apartment complex, possibly because she knew about a homicide that had occurred. Cops traced the caller to the Woodside Condominiums [photo], on Shadowood Circle.
Acting on the tip, cops launched a search and located Hughes’ body in a wooded area behind a hospital just before 2am Saturday, but they waited until daybreak to remove the body
Hours earlier, at 4.42pm on Friday, another woman contacted the authorities, telling them she was being held captive at an apartment complex.
The caller did not known her exact location, but deputies began tracking her phone and found her at Woodside Condominiums on Shadowood Circle.
When they arrived at the scene, they saw the woman, with her hands bound together with zipties, fall down a flight of stairs.
The kidnap victim, who suffered injuries that required medical treatment, told the deputies that she knew about a killing that had taken place, and it may have prompted her abduction.
Deputies launched a large-scale search and located Hughes’ body near St Vincent’s East Hospital just before 2am.
They secured the area and waited until daybreak to remove the body.
According to the victim’s older brother, Branden Hughes, his sister grew up in Massachusetts and relocated to Alabama in 2003, reported Al.com.
The siblings were particularly close. Branden said Kellie was his best friend and was loved by everyone for her vibrant personality and her ability to make people laugh.
The brother said he does not know why anyone would want to hurt her.
‘Kellie was friends with everybody and some of those friends I did not like, and I told her that,’ he noted. ‘I just kind wish she would have listened to us a little more… I guess she just got friendly with the wrong group of people.’
Branden, who is a retired serviceman, addressed his sister’s killer directly in an ominous Facebook post: ‘you will be found, and I hope you get the max sentence because it will be so much better than what I want to do to you.’
Branden has launched a GoFundMe campaign seeking donations to pay for his sister’s funeral.
Kellie Hughes was married but she and her husband were separated. They were still close, however, and it was her husband who called Kellie’s family to deliver the tragic news about her death, her brother said,
