The five men &#8216;directly took part in the killing&#8217; at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, the kingdom&#8217;s public prosecutor said.<br />
A further three people were jailed, but former royal adviser Saud al-Qahtani &#8211; a close aide of crown prince Mohammed bin Salman &#8211; was not charged.<br />
The trials were held in near-secrecy and today&#8217;s sentences sparked immediate claims of a cover-up to protect the prince, who denies involvement in the killing.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">UN investigator Agnes Callamard, who wrote a report setting out &#8216;credible evidence&#8217; of Prince Mohammed&#8217;s involvement, today labelled the Saudi inquiry a &#8216;travesty&#8217;.<br />
&#8216;The travesty of investigation, prosecution and justice continues,&#8217; Callamard wrote on Twitter.<br />
Amnesty International described the verdicts a &#8216;whitewash&#8217;, pointing out that the kingdom had a record of &#8216;grossly unfair trials&#8217;.<br />
&#8216;This verdict is a whitewash which brings neither justice nor the truth for Jamal Khashoggi and his loved ones,&#8217; spokesperson Lynn Maalouf said.<br />
&#8216;The trial has been closed to the public and to independent monitors, with no information available as to how the investigation was carried out.<br />
&#8216;The verdict fails to address the Saudi authorities&#8217; involvement in this devastating crime or clarify the location of Jamal Khashoggi&#8217;s remains.&#8217;<br />
Turkey also criticized today&#8217;s verdicts, saying key aspects of the case such as the location of Khashoggi&#8217;s body were &#8216;left in the dark&#8217;.<br />
The decision &#8216;far from meets the expectations of both our country and the international community to shed light on the murder with all its dimensions and deliver justice,&#8217; the Turkish foreign ministry said.<br />
Christophe Deloire of Reporters Without Borders said: &#8216;When Saudis sentence five to death for Khashoggi&#8217;s murder, we fear that it is a way to silence them for ever and to conceal the truth.<br />
&#8216;We cannot consider death penalty helps to bring justice. We still expect a full accounting.&#8217;<br />
Saudi investigators also claimed that the killing was &#8216;not premeditated&#8217;, contradicting the findings of the UN report.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Prosecution spokesman Shalaan al-Shalaan claimed that &#8216;the decision [to kill Khashoggi] was taken at the spur of the moment&#8217;.<br />
He claimed that when the killers saw that it would be impossible to transfer the journalist to a safe place to negotiate with him, they decided to kill him.<br />
&#8216;It was agreed, in consultation between the head of the negotiating team and the culprits, to kill Jamal Khashoggi inside the consulate,&#8217; Shalaan said in response to questions from journalists.<br />
According to state TV, an investigation by the Saudi attorney general found insufficient evidence against al-Qahtani and he was not charged.<br />
However, al-Qahtani has been sanctioned in the United States for his alleged role in the operation. al-Qahtani allegedly, &#8216;was part of the planning and execution of the operation&#8217; to kill Khashoggi.<br />
Qahtani has not appeared in public since Khashoggi&#8217;s murder and his current whereabouts are unknown.<br />
The Saudi consul-general in Istanbul at the time, Mohammed al-Otaibi, was found not guilty and released from prison.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">&#8216;The court issued death sentences on five men who directly took part in the killing,&#8217; the prosecutor said in a statement.<br />
Another three men were jailed for a combined total of 24 years &#8216;for their role in covering up this crime and violating the law&#8217;, the kingdom announced, while three of the 11 people on trial were found not guilty.<br />
The names of the suspects were not released, but are believed to include intelligence operative Maher Mutreb who frequently traveled with the crown prince on foreign tours.<br />
Forensic expert Salah al-Tubaigy and Fahad al-Balawi, a member of the Saudi royal guard, were also said to be among the suspects.<br />
The trials were carried out in almost total secrecy, although a handful of diplomats as well as members of Khashoggi&#8217;s family were allowed in. Nine sessions were held at the criminal court in Riyadh.<br />
The attorney general&#8217;s office said today it is looking into the verdicts to see whether to move ahead in the appellate court.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">A UN probe found that a team of 15 Saudi agents were flown specifically to Turkey to meet Khashoggi that day inside the consulate.<br />
They included a forensic doctor, intelligence and security officers and individuals who worked for the crown prince&#8217;s office.<br />
An audio recording of Khashoggi&#8217;s last moments, which has been heard by UN investigators, apparently reveals how the alleged Saudi &#8216;hit squad&#8217; accosted Khashoggi who died amid &#8216;sounds of a struggle&#8217;.<br />
His remains were never found, but it is believed that Khashoggi&#8217;s killers dismembered his body and removed it from the consulate.<br />
Riyadh offered a variety of explanations for Khashoggi&#8217;s disappearance, which helped to fuel suspicion that the prince was behind the operation.<br />
The Saudis initially denied any knowledge of what happened, insisting for weeks that Khashoggi had walked out of the consulate alive.<br />
After finally acknowledging that he had died in the building, Saudi officials then claimed he had died accidentally during a brawl.<br />
Changing tack again, the Saudis finally admitted the journalist was murdered, charged 11 people but denied that the prince had been involved.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">However, a UN report published in June said there was &#8216;credible evidence&#8217; linking the crown prince to the killing.<br />
In a 99-page report, the UN&#8217;s special investigator Agnes Callamard said experts found it &#8216;inconceivable&#8217; that a sophisticated 15-man mission to kill Khashoggi could have happened without Prince Mohammed&#8217;s knowledge.<br />
Two of the alleged hit squad had used diplomatic passports, and that the encounter at the consulate was &#8216;only possible because of the pretense of government service&#8217;, she said.<br />
Prince Mohammed had allowed a wide-ranging crackdown on journalists and regime opponents in the past, she said.<br />
On top of that, she said Saudi officials &#8216;multiple steps apparently designed to destroy evidence&#8217; after Khashoggi&#8217;s death.<br />
Callamard also warned that the search for justice must not be left to the Saudi judicial system, which is &#8216;so vulnerable to political interference.&#8217;<br />
In an interview in September this year, Prince Mohammed said he took &#8216;full responsibility&#8217; for Khashoggi&#8217;s death, but denied that he ordered the murder.</p>
