Trooper Charles Hewitt has been placed on administrative leave as officials investigate the incident, which took place in Fairfax County on April 20 of last year.<br />
At the time, black motorist Derrick Thompson was pulled over by Hewitt and several other troopers while driving to his job at the Cheesecake Factory in Tysons Corner.</span><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;"> </span></div>

<p><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">One of the troopers claimed they smelled marijuana and ordered Thompson to step out of his vehicle, at which point he began filming the encounter on his cell phone.<br />
The two-minute video &#8211; which is now being examined by the Virginia State Police &#8211; shows Trooper Hewitt telling Thompson: &#8221;You&#8217;re going to get your a** whooped!&#8217;<br />

&#8216;Sir, my hands are up, I&#8217;m not threat&#8230; I feel unsafe. I have just been threatened by an officer as two other officers stand by and say absolutely nothing,&#8217; Thompson subsequently states.</p>

<p>In his report Hewitt stated that Thompson was driving on a suspended license. He also states that he &#8216;believed that there was a strong odor of marijuana in the car&#8217;.<br />
Thompson states that the encounter occurred after he was stopped for an expired vehicle inspection decal in Fairfax county on April 20, last year.</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">Thompson was subsequently arrested for misdemeanor obstruction of justice without force, and plead guilty in a district court earlier this year.<br />
However, Thompson&#8217;s attorney, Josh Erlich, has now sent the video footage to Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring accompanied by a letter saying his client was &#8216;unconstitutionally harassed&#8217;.<br />
Erlich also shared the clip to his Twitter account earlier this week, saying Thompson had been &#8216;terrorized&#8217; and &#8216;assaulted&#8217;<br />
The lawyer told <a class="class" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/virginia-state-police-investigating-violent-traffic-stop-involving-black-motorist-official-says/2020/07/15/5b26fbbe-c6de-11ea-a99f-3bbdffb1af38_story.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener">The Washington Post</a> that Thompson had also suffered cuts to his face during his arrest.</p>

Virginia State Police superintendent, Col. Gary T. Settle released a statement saying he has watched the video and found that &#8216;the conduct displayed by Trooper Hewitt during the course of the traffic stop is not in agreement with the established standards of conduct required of a Virginia trooper. &#8216;<br />
