A man in Hangzhou, eastern China has been arrested by police for allegedly killing his wife, dismembering the body and flushing some of her remains down the toilet in a gruesome case that has shocked the country.
Xu Guoli, 55, has been accused of killing his 51-year-old wife, Lai, while she was asleep according to a city’s legal authority. The couple were having domestic disputes according to the reports.
He allegedly dumped part of her wife’s cut up remains in several locations and got rid of her body tissue partially through the toilet at their home in eastern China’s Zhejiang Province. Xu was formally arrested yesterday in the city of Hangzhou on suspicion of intentional homicide. In a statement, the city’s legal authorities described Xu’s crime as cruel, and the nature of his act as ‘evil’.
The chilling details of the gruesome crime emerged when Xu filed a missing person report with police last month claiming his wife left home in the middle of the night and ‘mysteriously’ vanished.
Reports by state broadcaster CCTV., state that police started looking at Xu as the main suspect in his wife’s disappearance after discovering human tissue in the septic tank in the community where the couple lived.

According to the state-run media outlet, Xu worked as a driver in Hangzhou before the case and his wife, Lai, was a cleaner. The couple who were earlier divorced for unspecified reasons remarried in 2008.
Xu Guoli initially claimed he discovered that his wife had vanished after waking up on the early morning of July 5. He also that the couple they had had spent whole of the previous day ‘happily and harmoniously’ with their daughter.
CCTV released the last surveillance footage of Ms Lai, which showed her getting into the elevator with her daughter at around 5pm on July 4.

Two days later Xu and his daughter went to the police to file a missing person report.
A thorough search in the community yielded no leads. Investigators also reviewed around 6,000 hours worth of security camera footage, but could not see evidence of Lai leaving the building.
Speaking to a local TV station on July 17, Mr Xu said that his wife could have taken off with other individuals in the middle of the night, lamenting that he now faced the prospect of raising their daughter alone.
He said: ‘What about my daughter’s life? What about my life? When exactly will my wife return? [We] don’t even know if she is alive or dead.’
The break came July 21 after a police task force investigating the case decided to drain the septic tank at the couple’s residence.

Police summoned Xu for questioning in the early hours of July 23. He eventually broke nine hours of interrogation, admitting to slaying his wife and dismembering the body.
Xu confessed that he had felt dissatisfied with Lai due to ‘conflicts in [their] family life’, This was his motivation for killing her in her sleep in the early hours of July 5.
Last Thursday, the Hangzhou Public Bureau applied for permission to arrest Mr Xu.
The case is under further investigation.
