A family lawyer said the chase began over a busted tail light.<br />
Now fired Georgia State Patrol officer Jacob G. Thompson, has been charged in the murder of the driver Julian Lewis on August 7.<br />
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Thompson, 27, on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault in connection to the incident in Screven County.<br />
A week later, Thompson has been booked into the Screven County Jail and was fired from the Department of Public Safety, Georgia State Patrol, according to a <a class="class" href="https://gbi.georgia.gov/press-releases/2020-08-08/gbi-investigates-officer-involved-shooting-screven-county" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener">release</a> from the GBI. Thompson joined the <span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">Georgia State Patrol in 2013.</span></p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font">On August 7, Thompson attempted to stop a Nissan Sentra that Julian Lewis had been driving on Stoney Pond Road at around 9.20pm. Lewis refused to stop and the two engaged in a brief chase down several county roads.<br />
<span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">Reports indicate that Thompson used a Precision Intervention Technique (PIT) and caused the Sentra to stop in a ditch.<br />
</span><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">He fired one round, hitting Lewis, who was then pronounced dead at the scene.<br />

</span>&#8216;At some point, I heard the engine on the violator&#8217;s vehicle revving at a high rate of speed,&#8217; he stated.<br />
&#8216;I saw him wrenching the steering wheel in an aggressive back and forth manner towards me and my patrol vehicle. It appeared to me that the violator was trying to use his vehicle to injure me. Being in fear for my life and safety, I discharged my weapon once.&#8217;</p>

<p class="mol-para-with-font"><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">The president of Georgia&#8217;s NAACP chapter called the slaying of Julian Edward Roosevelt Lewis another chilling example of a Black man being killed unlawfully by a white law enforcement officer.<br />
“No one should have to bury a loved one simply because of a busted tail light,” said the Rev. James Woodall, president of the Georgia NAACP.<br />
“This was a case of racial profiling. We are not necessarily happy right now. Yes, the man was arrested, but we’re done dying.”<br />
An attorney for Lewis&#8217; family said the trooper initiated the traffic stop over a burned-out tail light and Lewis was shot almost immediately after the trooper forced his car into a ditch.<br />
</span><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">“Mr. Lewis never got out of the vehicle and the investigation will show that, mere seconds after the crash, he was shot to death, shot in the face and killed,” attorney Francys Johnson said.<br />
</span><span style="color: var(--color-text); font-size: 1rem;">Johnson said that information was given to the family by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which arrested Trooper Thompson on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault Friday, seven days later.<br />
The agency did not include those details in its own statement on Thompson&#8217;s arrest, Johnson said, adding that he</span> learned Aug 14, that the U.S. Department of Justice had approved his request for the civil rights investigation into the incident.<br />
&#8216;We got lots of messages from people in the community that the habit of ex-trooper Thompson was to racially profile and harass Black and brown people on the highway,&#8217; Johnson, former head of the Georgia NAACP, said. &#8216;This was not shocking to them that this happened.&#8217;</p>
