<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A California police officer has been fired after fatally shooting a Black man, but he was only canned because another officer was in his line of fire.<br>Ryan McMahon was terminated Wednesday.<br>McMahon, who has been involved in two fatal shootings within the course of a year, was fired from the police department, a month after documents surfaced revealing the police chief recommended McMahon his termination for firing a shot that could have struck his partner.<br>McMahon fatally shot two Black men during his time on the force, once in February 2018 and again in February 2019.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On Feb. 9, 2019, McMahon and five other officers fired 55 bullets at Willie McCoy, an aspiring 20-year-old rapper. McCoy had fallen asleep in his car at a Taco Bell drive-thru and was killed seconds after he woke up. The shooting was captured by the officers&#8217; body cameras. <br>Police officers were there for a welfare check at the fast-food restaurant after an employee reported a man “slumped over” in the driver’s seat of a silver Mercedes-Benz.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>McMahon ; “violated department policies by engaging in unsafe conduct and neglect for basic firearm safety” in the 2019 fatal shooting of Willie McCoy outside of a Taco Bell, the city announced in a news release Thursday. McCoy was shot multiple times by six Vallejo officers in an incident that has become the subject of a still-active federal lawsuit. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Police reports claim that McCoy was asleep when officers spotted a gun on his lap and noted that the car was in drive. As McCoy awoke, officers said he leaned forward and reached toward the weapon, a claim that was not borne out by independent review of the tapes.<br>Authorities say McCoy was shot a dozen times, but the victim&#8217;s family members who viewed ;his body said he was shot more than 20 times. In fact Police fired more than 55 rounds at Willie McCoy in <a href="https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-police-shooting-willie-mccoy-report-20190627-story.html">less than 4 seconds</a>, independent reports show.<br>The shooting sparked outrage in the Bay Area community and scrutiny of the Vallejo Police Department.<br>McMahon ultimately was fired after an internal investigation because another officer was in his “field of fire&#8221; when he shot at McCoy, according to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/10/01/vallejo-cop-fired-for-almost-shooting-partner-in-2019-incident-where-six-cops-killed-willie-mccoy/" target="_blank">San Jose Mecury News</a>.<br>McMahon “violated department policies by engaging in unsafe conduct and neglect for basic firearm safety,” Vallejo police said in a ;<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://myemail.constantcontact.com/Vallejo-PD-Terminates-Former-Officer-Ryan-McMahon-for-Policy-Violations.html?soid=1107787334147&;aid=2QTyk7vBdhk" target="_blank">press release</a>.</p>
