<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A jury sitting in Knoxville, Tennessee Friday, Oct 2, convicted Joel Guy Jr., in the murder of his parents over the 2016 Thanksgiving holiday before chopping up their bodies. He then tried to chemically dissolve the pieces.<br>According to <a href="https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/crime/2020/10/02/joel-guy-jr-convicted-killing-and-dismembering-parents/5879895002/?utm_source=knewz">The Knoxville News Sentinel</a>, it took the jury about three hours of deliberation to convict the 32-year-old former medical student in the deaths of his parents Joel Guy Sr., 61, and Lisa Guy, 55, four years ago.<br><strong>Related Articles:</strong> </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Knox County jury were swayed by the prosecution&#8217;s argument that Joel Guy Jr. fatally stabbed his parents and dismembered their bodies after he learned they would no longer foot his bills.<br>After the defendant was convicted on multiple counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, Judge Steve Sword imposed an automatic life sentence. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty in the case. <br>A separate hearing is scheduled for November to determine if those life terms should be served consecutively.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The verdict was not unexpected, as prosecutors presented volumes of evidence pointing to the fact that Joel Guy Jr. murdered his parents because they had decided they would no longer foot his bills, on the eve of their retirement.<br>The medical student never had a job and had been taking college courses for a decade at Louisiana State University. The murders were part of a plot to cash in on $500,000 in life insurance benefits, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-knoxville-archive-crime-9c72fa30ecff9bf60020e84a14f8271f?utm_source=knewz">prosecutors said</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jurors also heard the gruesome details about the killings prior to voting to convict.<br>The evidence presented by the prosecution showed that Guy Jr. attacked his dad after his mother left to go shopping.<br>He waited on her to return and then attacked Lisa Guy as she arrived home. <br>After the murders, the killer drained what money he could from his parents bank accounts to cover his rent and tuition.<br>He then planned to wait to collect life insurance benefits.<br>Joel Guy Jr. had chopped up his parents corpses for easier disposal after killing them. Responding officers found Lisa Guy’s severed head jammed in a boiling pot on the stovetop.<br>The couple’s severed torsos and limbs were stuffed into plastic storage containers filled with various chemicals. <br>The killer unsuccessfully attempted to slough off their skin and dissolve their bodies to cover up the murders, the prosecution said.<br>He was found to have taken money from his parents’ bank accounts for his rent and tuition after the horrific crime.<br>Prosecutor Leslie Nassos previously painted the image of the horrific crime scene for the jurors.<br>Joel Guy Jr. created a “diabolical stew of human remains,” Nassos said.<br>“The killer put Lisa’s body parts in one, and Joel Sr’s in another, and then he covered them with a corrosive substance, and left them there to liquefy into some sort of diabolical stew of human remains,” Nassos told the panel.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“He got out a stockpot, placed her head in the pot, filled it with liquid, carried it over to the stove, covered it, turned on the stove, and left it there to cook,” prosecutor Nassos said describing how Joel Guy Jr. cut off his mother’s head and left it to cook in its own grisly stew.<br>In his testimony Knox County Sheriff’s Office detective, Jeremy McCord, also described the carnage he found inside the Guys’ home as “the most horrific thing I’ve ever encountered in police work – in my life.”<br>Before the verdict and sentencing, his relatives appeared in court to deliver victim impact statements about the deaths of Lisa Guy and Joel Guy Sr.<br>The stoic defendant appeared to show no visible reaction to the statements from his heartbroken family member, <a href="https://lawandcrime.com/live-trials/live-trials-current/joel-guy-jr/chilling-murderer-joel-guy-jr-had-no-visible-reaction-as-family-delivered-heartwrenching-impact-statements/?utm_source=knewz">Law and Crime</a> reported.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The killer&#8217;s uncle ;Alvin Madere Jr. ;told the court that Joel Guy Jr’s grandmother was hospitalized after the brutal 2016 murders of his sister and brother-in-law, and never recovered. She was hospitalized the day after the murders, and remained there until she died the day after Lisa Guy’s funeral in 2016<br>The Guys were a blended family. Guy Sr. had daughters from a previous relationship, while the defendant was the only child of both victims with- Lisa described as a loving mother to them all during the trial.<br></p>
