<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A U.S. Army drill sergeant on holiday leave was found fatally shot in San Antonio, Texas, on New Year’s Day.<br>Jessica Mitchell, 30, was discovered inside her car with multiple gunshot wounds by first responders investigating a stranded car around 3 a.m. <br>Mitchell, a drill seargent who was assigned to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, was found with multiple gunshot wounds around 3 a.m. on Friday, in a vehicle along Interstate 10 in San Antonio, according to the San Antonio Police Department and Joint Base San Antonio. <br>The car, a white Dodge Challenger, had multiple gunshots to the driver’s side door and window.<br>Mitchell, a dental specialist, was rushed to University Hospital San Antonio, where she was pronounced dead.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mitchell had been assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence since August 2019 and before that worked at a joint base dental clinic, according to military officials.<br>Her sister said that Mitchell had made at least one social media post about “ringing in the new year” hours before her body was discovered.<br>“Why would anybody want to do this,” her sister, Ashley Mitchell, told <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/family-searches-for-answers-after-first-responders-find-army-drill-sgt-shot-dead-in-car" target="_blank">WOAI</a>. “Why why why why? Why? Why do people do such heinous acts of crime for no reason? You know, like, human life is not material it cannot be replaced.”<br>San Antonio Police Department and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division are both investigating the suspicious death.<br>“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drill Sergeant Jessica Mitchell,” Maj. Gen. Dennis LeMaster, the Medical Center of Excellence Commanding General, said in a statement. “Our sincere condolences go out to her family and friends. We are focused on supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family as well as her soldiers during this extremely difficult time.”<br>Mitchell is survived by her 10-year-old son.</p>
