<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two sheriff deputies were among five people who died Wednesday in a grisly standoff at a home in North Carolina, officials said. The suspect and two other victims also died during the 13-hour ordeal in Boone, North Carolina.<br>The deputies both worked for the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and had been carrying out a welfare check when the shooter opened fire, officials with the department said.<br>Sergeant Chris Ward died after being flown to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment, while K-9 Deputy Logan Fox died at the scene.<br>Authorities have not identified the others by name, but confirmed the two victims were a married couple who lived at the home. The suspect has not been named.was identified as the 32-year-old son of one of the victims, and stepson to another.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sheriff Hagaman said that deputies had been to the home over the weekend but it was unclear why. On Wednesday, deputies were sent to the home to check on the suspect’s mother and stepfather, but Hagaman said they did not expect the shooter to be there.<br>“This is an incredibly tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved as well as their families and our community,” reads a statement from Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman.<br>The welfare check occurred Wednesday morning after a resident of the home did not go to work. The resident and family members also did not answer phone calls, authorities said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The shooter allegedly opened fire after the deputies, who responded to the scene at around 9:44 a.m., entered the home.<br>Deputies report they knew the suspect, who was reportedly waiting for them and knew the deputies. <br>Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox went to a home in Boone, about 102 miles northwest of Charlotte, on a welfare check around 9:45 a.m. ET Wednesday, according to the Watauga County Sheriff&#8217;s Office. <br>Someone reported that the homeowner and his family had not shown up to work or answered any calls. The deputies identified all vehicles on the property in the 500 block of Hardaman Circle and entered the house.<br>That is when authorities said someone inside opened fire, striking both deputies and triggering a 13-hour standoff.<br>During an initial rescue attempt of the deputies, a Boone police officer was hit by gunfire, but was uninjured because he was wearing a helmet which protected his head when it was struck by a bullet, Sheriff Len Hagaman said. <br>The shooter allegedly, died in an apparent suicide, an official with the Morganton Department of Public Safety told local newspaper <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://morganton.com/news/local/watauga-standoff-ends-in-apparent-suicide/article_ecb1b630-a899-11eb-bcdc-fb630abfb358.html" target="_blank">The News Herald.</a><br>Others who lived in the area were evacuated as authorities surrounded the house, where the standoff came to its conclusion at around 1 a.m. EDT</p>
