A Queens man suspected of fatally shooting his mother’s abusive boyfriend has turned himself in to face charges after a week on the run, police said Wednesday.
Desean McCain, 22, surrendered to authorities with an attorney on Tuesday for the slaying of Anthony Ragler, cops said.
Ragler, 47, from Brooklyn was dating McCain’s mother.
Cops had been called repeatedly to the mother’s apartment inside NYCHA’s Pomonok Houses on Parsons Blvd. at 65th Ave. to quell clashes between her and Ragler, police sources said.
McCain allegedly shot Ragler in front of his mother and her 8-year-old grandson about 7:20 p.m. Nov. 2 in their home during an argument, cops said.
McCain reportedly was fed up over the repeated beatings of his mother by her boyfriend fatally shot him in their Queens apartment November 2 night, police said.
Cops arrived at the scene to find Ragler shot in the head and chest in a fourth-floor apartment.
Medics took him to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, but he couldn’t be saved.
“He deserved it. He was always beating on that woman. He was drinking every day and putting his hands on her and her son,” a family friend who lives downstairs told the Daily News following the shooting.
“There were two shots and then the police came knocking.”
The mother needs a walker to get around, the downstairs neighbor said.
When cops arrived they found Ragler shot in the head and chest inside the fourth-floor apartment. EMS rushed him to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Queens but he couldn’t be saved.
McCain fled the scene. On Tuesday, cops from the NYPD’s Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested him through a negotiated surrender coordinated by his attorney, officials said.
He made no statements to arresting officers as he was taken into custody, officials said.
It wasn’t clear if McCain interrupted an assault on his mother when he shot her boyfriend or if he’d just had enough of the abuse, police sources said.
Cops responded to a past domestic incident between the mother and her boyfriend in 2018, sources said. Cops had also been called to the apartment in the past to quell heated arguments between McCain and his mother, officials said. McCain is charged with murder, criminal possession of a weapon and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
His arraignment in Queens Criminal Court was pending Wednesday.
