Two beloved longtime campus officers were shot and killed Tuesday at a private college in Virginia and a man was taken into custody and charged with capital murder following a campus lockdown and massive search, officials said.
‘This is a sad and dark day for Bridgewater College,’ President David Bushman said in a statement. ‘They ‘were shot and killed on campus while protecting us.’
He identified the two officers as Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson, close friends who he described as a ‘dynamic duo.’
‘John was J.J.’s best man in his wedding this year,’ he added. ‘They were beloved by students, faculty and staff. I hurt for their families and loved ones, as I know we all do.’
The suspect, Alexander Wyatt Campbell, 27, was taken into custody at around 1:55 p.m., Virginia State Police said at a press conference Tuesday night.

Making his escape, Campbell had waded through the North River and onto an island where he was found with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and arrested, Virginia State Police said Tuesday night.
The alleged shooter was taken into custody by nearly a dozen officers. Authorities were still working to determine if Campbell was shot by police or whether he shot himself.
He is charged with two counts of capital murder, one count of murder in the first degree and one count of using a firearm in commission of felony.
Campbell is being held at the Rockingham County Jail without bond. A motive remains unclear.
At the press conference Tuesday, state police say the incident began at around 1:20 p.m. when two officers responded to a call for a suspicious male at Memorial Hall on campus.
When police arrived on campus, there was a brief interaction and the suspect opened fire, shooting both offices. He then fled on foot.

The Bridgewater College campus located about 125 miles northwest of the state capital, Richmond. Officials sent out a tweet warning students and faculty about a shooter on campus and a lockdown was put in place.
According to the state police, a man fitting the shooter’s condition was located in the town of Bridgewater waded through a river and onto an island in the north river. He was taken into custody without incident around 1:55 p.m.


The college gave the all-clear about 4:30 p.m.
It wasn’t immediately clear what led up to the shooting. No other injuries were reported.
‘Two members of the Bridgewater College family were senselessly and violently taken from us,’ Bushman added. ‘The sadness is palpable. Words are not adequate, not nearly so, to express the grief, sadness, fear and – justifiably – the anger we all feel.’
Bridgewater College is a private liberal arts college located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Richmond. Historically affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, the school had an enrollment of about 1,500 full-time students in the fall of 2021, according to its website.



The shooter according to sources ‘ran track at Patrick Henry High School, and graduated there in 2013.’ Campbell, an Ashland, Virginia native reportedly, was a former student ‘who was once a stand-out on Bridgewater’s track team.’
Bridgewater College is a private liberal arts college. Historically affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, the school had an enrollment of about 1,500 full-time students in the fall of 2021, according to its website.
