<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two beloved longtime campus officers were shot and killed Tuesday at a private college in Virginia and a man was taken into custody and charged with capital murder following a campus lockdown and massive search, officials said. <br>&#8216;This is a sad and dark day for Bridgewater College,&#8217; President David Bushman said in a statement. &#8216;They &#8216;were shot and killed on campus while protecting us.&#8217; <br>He identified the two officers as Campus Police Officer John Painter and Campus Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson, close friends who he described as a &#8216;dynamic duo.&#8217; <br>&#8216;John was J.J.&#8217;s best man in his wedding this year,&#8217; he added. &#8216;They were beloved by students, faculty and staff. I hurt for their families and loved ones, as I know we all do.&#8217; <br>The suspect, Alexander Wyatt Campbell, 27, was taken into custody at around 1:55 p.m., Virginia State Police said at a press conference Tuesday night. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Making his escape, Campbell had waded through the North River and onto an island where he was found with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and arrested, Virginia State Police said Tuesday night. <br>The alleged shooter was taken into custody by nearly a dozen officers. Authorities were still working to determine if Campbell was shot by police or whether he shot himself. <br>He is charged with two counts of capital murder, one count of murder in the first degree and one count of using a firearm in commission of felony. <br>Campbell is being held at the Rockingham County Jail without bond. A motive remains unclear. <br>At the press conference Tuesday, state police say the incident began at around 1:20 p.m. when two officers responded to a call for a suspicious male at Memorial Hall on campus. <br>When police arrived on campus, there was a brief interaction and the suspect opened fire, shooting both offices. He then fled on foot. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Bridgewater College campus located about 125 miles northwest of the state capital, Richmond. Officials sent out a tweet warning students and faculty about a shooter on campus and a lockdown was put in place. <br>According to the state police, a ;man fitting the shooter’s condition was located in the town of Bridgewater waded through a river and onto an island in the north river. He was taken into custody without incident around 1:55 p.m. ;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The college gave the all-clear about 4:30 p.m. ; ; ;<br>It wasn&#8217;t immediately clear what led up to the shooting. No other injuries were reported.<br>&#8216;Two members of the Bridgewater College family were senselessly and violently taken from us,&#8217; Bushman added. &#8216;The sadness is palpable. Words are not adequate, not nearly so, to express the grief, sadness, fear and &#8211; justifiably &#8211; the anger we all feel.&#8217;<br>Bridgewater College is a private liberal arts college located about 125 miles (200 kilometers) northwest of Richmond. Historically affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, the school had an enrollment of about 1,500 full-time students in the fall of 2021, according to its website.</p>
