<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A New York City man accused of shooting an off-duty NYPD officer in the head was arrested after being found hiding out in a hotel just north of the city.<br>The suspect, career criminal Randy “Popper” Jones, 38, was transported back to Brooklyn on Monday after police hunted him down at a hotel, where he was found holed up with his girlfriend and her kids. <br>The hotel is located in Rockland County, just northwest of Manhattan on the New Jersey border.<br>He is accused of shooting an off duty New York City police officer, Adeed Fayaz, in the head during a botched robbery last Saturday in East New York. The 26-year-old father of two, remains on life support.<br>The handcuffs used to arrest Jones reportedly belonged to the officer Fayaz whom he allegedly shot.<br>Jones was brought into the 75th Precinct around 7pm Monday night. <br>He will be charged with attempted murder, police said Tuesday. Those charges will be upgraded if the gravely wounded officer is pronounced dead. <br>Jones who is yet to be charged, has retained a lawyer.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The critically injured officer, Adeed Fayaz, remained on life support at Brookdale Hospital. Doctors would be checking again for brain activity and that the officer could be taken off life support as early as Tuesday, <br>Fayaz was shot Saturday evening after he and his brother-in-law responded to a Facebook Marketplace advert for an auto sale in East New York. The suspect allegedly, lured the victim into an ambush by pretending to sell a car through Facebook market place. <br>The victim and his brother-in-law arrived with $24,000 in cash to buy the advertised Honda Pilot.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig: “[Jones] then asked jokingly, ‘Are youse guys carrying a gun?’ Both men responded no,” Essig told reporters Tuesday morning.<br>“At this time on perpetrator grabs [Fayaz] in a headlock, points the gun at his head and demands the money”.<br>Essig said, “Our officer states he doesn’t have the money, at which time the perpetrator points the firearm at the brother-in-law.<br>“Police Officer Fayaz is able to break free at which time the male fired, striking him in the head. The officer’s brother-in-law removes the firearm from our officer’s hip and returns fire at least six times, but the robber managed to escape in a black BMW.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After a city-wide manhunt, the getaway vehicle, a black BMW SUV was located abandoned in Harlem, near where the suspect lived with his girlfriend.<br>Sources also said the BMW belonged to the suspect&#8217;s mother, who lived near where the shooting took place, at 129th Street and Park Avenue in East New York<br>It is believed he could behind a similar robbery which took place near the shooting scene on January 13.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jones&#8217; criminal record includes a 2014 domestic bust for strangulation, and sources said he was being sought on a 2019 warrant for driving without a license at the time of his arrest on Monday. <br>His rap sheet lists 22 busts, including for grand larceny, harassment and strangulation and some violent attacks.<br>Jones has reportedly declined to answer questions from investigators.<br></p>
