<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Georgia star defensive lineman Jalen Carter was racing and driving recklessly in the crash that killed one of his teammates and a team staffer, police say.<br>Police issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for the top 2023 NFL Draft prospect, who is currently at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, in connection with the crash that happened around 2.45 am in downtown Athens, on Jan. 15.<br>Carter was driving a 2021 Jeep Trackhawk “in a manner consistent with racing” the morning that Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock, 20, and assistant football coach Chandler LeCroy, 24, died, according to an investigation by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.<br>Investigators said alcohol and speed were factors in crash. <br>The issue of an warrant for the arrest of Carter, 21, for Reckless Driving and Racing was announced on Wednesday after cops filed misdemeanor street racing and reckless charges against the college star.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the police report LeCroy who was driving a Ford Expedition was racing Carter in a Jeep Trackhawk around 2.30 am, after leaving downtown Athens.<br>Both vehicles at some point switched lanes entered the center lane, occupying opposite lanes of travel.<br>They overtook other motorists, traveling at high speed as the sought to outpace the other.<br>They vehicles reportedly, &#8216;struck a wire, a light post and a tree, before they slammed the building.&#8217;<br>Before the crash LeCroy&#8217;s Expedition was traveling at 104 mph, according to the police report.<br>Toxicology indicated her blood alcohol concentration was .197 at the time of the crash. <br>The current legal blood alcohol limit in Georgia is . 08% for adult drivers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recruiting staff member, Tory Bowles, 26, and offensive lineman Warren McClendon, 21, and another football team member suffered injuries in the collision but are expected to recover.<br>The tragedy occurred hours after thousands of Bulldogs fans had gathered to celebrate their second consecutive national title win.<br>“The evidence demonstrated that both vehicles switched between lanes, drove in the center turn lane, drove in opposite lanes of travel, overtook other motorists, and drove at high rates of speed, in an apparent attempt to outdistance each other,” the Athens-Clarke County Police Department <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://twitter.com/PatrickQuinnTV/status/1630947829861478400/photo/1" target="_blank">said in a release</a> Wednesday morning.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Carter’s presence at the moment of the crash, previously unreported, alters the narrative that Athens police officials offered publicly from the beginning. It was, officials said, simply a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-bulldogs/breaking-georia-devin-willock-chandler-lecroy-killed-in-car-accident/OLNLWREO6NHZBGZEV7P6D4X3SY/" target="_blank">single-car accident</a>, caused by LeCroy’s driving too fast.<br>Investigators suspecting from the onset that other vehicles had been at the scene, discovered at least two of those vehicles were driven by Georgia football players. <br>Seeking evidence of possible racing, investigators obtained surveillance video from city-owned cameras along the route the players took out of downtown Athens. They also obtained footage from at least one business owner. <br>However, authorities have declined to release these videos, because they are considered evidence in an open case.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Commenting on the investigation, police said “Evidence indicated that shortly before the crash the Expedition was traveling at about 104 miles per hour.”<br>An <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ajc.com/news/uga-star-jalen-carter-present-at-scene-of-fatal-crash/CZNFZLJK4ZBTVGKAWLOD6DANDE/" target="_blank">Atlanta Journal-Constitution report</a> on Wednesday said Carter, 21, told police he was about a mile away from the crash, and then later said he was following the car that had crashed.<br>Later, Carter said he had been following the car when it wrecked, close enough to see its taillights. <br>He also acknowledged that at one point he was alongside the other car, later determined to be traveling at at very high speeds. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Carter reportedly, left the crash scene, apparently before the police or emergency medical workers arrived. <br>When he returned an hour and a half later, he gave shifting accounts of the wreck as an Athens police officer questioned him about whether he had been racing the car that crashed. <br>Carter, a defensive star for Georgia who is projected as a top pick in this year’s NFL draft, was scheduled to speak to reporters in Indianapolis on Wednesday morning. That press conference was canceled once news of the arrest warrants broke.</p>
