<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One person is dead and three more injured after a gunman opened fire at a Washington DC funeral home after a service for a 24-year-old man who was shot dead himself last month.<br>The shooting unfolded outside the Stewart Funeral Home, shortly after a service for 24-year-old Stephon Lamont Carroll <strong>[photo left]</strong>. <br>The shooting happened about 20 minutes after a funeral ended for a victim of a homicide who was shot and killed in March.<br>As mourners were piling out of the funeral home at around 12.18pm, the gunman opened fire. He fled in a green vehicle and remains at large. <br>At a press conference this afternoon, DC police chief Robert Contee said Carroll too had been killed as the result of gun violence. <br>It remains unclear what the motive for today&#8217;s shooting at his funeral was, and Chief Contee did not give any further details about how Carroll died on March 24. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8216;The person who the funeral was for was a homicide victim in the latter part of March so at the family&#8217;s request, we will extend additional police presence in the area of the funeral.<br>&#8216;Their loved one died as a result of gun violence.<br>&#8216;Someone decided to disrespect the family at this level and commit this senseless act of violence at this kid&#8217;s funeral,&#8217; Chief Contee said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The family had requested police presence at the funeral because they were fearful of an incident, lithe one that unfolded, Chief Contee added.<br>At least four people were shot. One man died at the scene and three more people, two men and a woman, were taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to a spokesperson for DC Fire and EMS.“<br>At this point, it appears that several people who were in the block were specifically targeted,” Contee said at a news conference outside the funeral home. <br>“We’re unsure why that is, why these people were targeted, more or less why they were targeted at a funeral. We don’t understand that.” <br>Police have made no arrests in the case.</p>
