West Virginia National Guard soldier Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was shot in the head on Wednesday near the White House in Washington DC. She died on Thursday. The shooter has been charged with first-degree murder
Prosecutors have upgraded the charges against the man accused of shooting two National Guard troops in Washington DC after one of the victims passed away.
The alleged shooter Rahmanullah Lakanwal, will now face charges of first-degree murder after allegedly opening fire midweek on two soldiers with the National Guard, Andrew Wolfe, 24, and Sarah Beckstrom, 20, on Wednesday near the Farragut Square metro station – close to the White House.
Officials said Lakanwal, 29, drove over 2800 miles across the country from Bellingham, Washington, where he lived with his wife and children, to the District of Colombia, before he fired at the troops on Wednesday afternoon with a .357 revolver
Beckstrom died from her injuries on Thanksgiving Day. The second victim, Wolfe, remains in critical condition.
Lakanwal was previously charged with three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, however officials at the time said those charges were dependent on the condition of the victims.
Following the death of Beckstrom, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro amended the suspect’s charges from three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, to first-degree murder.

Pirro said the investigation into Lakanwal would continue ’24/7′, and she said her office is exploring bringing further charges.
‘We will find out what actually happened, in terms of this individual even being in this country, and being in a position to ambush and shoot down an innocent young woman who was doing her duty to the people of this country,’ Pirro added.
The upgraded charges against Lakanwal come as Trump revealed that he is considering deporting the family of the terror suspect, including at least five children.
The shooting sparked scrutiny on how the terror suspect was allowed to be brought to the US, and Trump has sought to quickly cast blame on the Biden administration.
Lakanwal was brought to the United States in 2021 as part of Operation ‘Allies Welcome’, launched during the Biden administration when the US withdrew from Afghanistan.
That initiative facilitated temporary visas for Afghans who assisted US Special Forces. Lakanwal’s application for asylum which was filed in 2024, was granted earlier this year under the Trump administration.
President Trump said Friday that he would ‘permanently pause’ all migration from third-world countries as a result.

Late on Wednesday night, CIA Director John Ratcliffe revealed that Lakanwal had direct links to the CIA from his work alongside US Special Forces in Afghanistan.
‘The Biden administration justified bringing the alleged shooter to the United States in September 2021 due to his prior work with the U.S. government, including CIA,’ Ratcliffe admitted.
He said his involvement with the CIA was ‘as a member of a partner force in Kandahar, which ended shortly following the chaotic evacuation.’
The CIA director criticized what he termed the Biden administration’s ‘disastrous’ actions during the withdrawal of Afghanistan, which allowed unvetted foreigners to enter the US on temporary visas.
‘The individual – and so many others – should have never been allowed to come here,’ Ratcliffe said.

As Trump announced that his administration would ‘permanently pause’ all migration’ from third world countries, he said officials would also order a green card audit of 19 nations in response to the shooting:
‘I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the US system to fully recover,’ the president wrote on social media.
Trump also vowed to end all federal benefits for non-citizens, de-naturalize migrants who undermine the US, and deport any foreign nationals deemed a security risk or ‘non-compatible with Western Civilization’.
‘Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation,’ he wrote in the Truth Social post.
The countries that will reportedly, face a re-examination are: Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.
