<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A man who brazenly attempted to kidnap a couple&#8217;s two-year-old daughter from outside their home in Tarrant County, Texas engaged the child&#8217;s father in a struggle which ended when the mom chased him away with a knife while yelling &#8216;you better put my daughter down or I will end your life.&#8217; <br>Steven Bayse, 62, was arrested by Tarrant County Sheriff&#8217;s deputies following a dangerous car chase, and charged with three felonies including kidnapping, evading arrest with a vehicle, and aggravated assault against a public servant. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He had followed Paige Ortiz and her husband Carlos to their home on Lansman Drive in Crowley, Texas after the family visited a nearby Walmart on Monday, June 5.<br>&#8216;By the time we made it to our neighborhood, that&#8217;s when I told my husband like, &#8221;hey, this man&#8217;s following us, like, this isn&#8217;t OK&#8221;,&#8217; Paige said to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/crime/article276198606.html" target="_blank">Forth Worth Star-Telegram</a>.<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.star-telegram.com/news/local/crime/article276198606.html" target="_blank"> </a> <br>&#8216;And my husband told me that I was just overreacting, it&#8217;s no big deal.&#8217; <br>She had just carried a load of groceries inside when she looked out the window and saw a stranger, later identified as Bayse, grab her two-year-old daughter. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Paige Ortiz was captured on security footage racing out of her home with a knife to help her husband Carlos, stop a man from kidnapping their two-year-old daughter from their front yard in Crowley, Texas on June 5.<br>Carlos was struggling with the suspect, which is when his wife came running outside with a knife. <br>&#8216;All I could say was &#8221;you better put my daughter down or I will end your life&#8221;,&#8217; she told <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/crime/kidnapping-suspect-arrested-tarrant-county-deputies-chase/287-1bd8440e-d572-4727-8963-164d034ea9c2" target="_blank">WFA</a>.<br>&#8216;I was just screaming and screaming at him. People I think are also questioning why I didn&#8217;t kill him.<br>&#8216;But I only had a certain amount of strength left and I had to make the choice to either pull her from his arms and get her to safety or end his life, and I chose to get her to safety.&#8217; <br>Carlos added: &#8216;It was a motherly instinct, for sure. I&#8217;m glad that it came so naturally, so fast, and so aggressive.&#8217; </p>

He engaged Bayse in a struggle when the suspect abruptly scooped the toddler up and started heading back to his truck, telling Carlos &#8216;you&#8217;re not the father of this child&#8217;</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bayse had earlier parked his blue truck across the street from the Ortiz home before approaching Carlos to question him about his truck while Paige carried in the groceries. <br>He then started to turn his focus to their young daughter. <br>&#8216;He started seeing my daughter out in the front yard. He was like, &#8221;oh that&#8217;s your daughter?&#8221; I was like, &#8221;Yes. It is&#8221;,&#8217; Carlos explained. <br>&#8216;He said &#8221;she&#8217;s cute, that could be like my Shelby,&#8221; that&#8217;s when I thought to myself, &#8221;okay, he&#8217;s probably talking about a relative, daughter, granddaughter of his,&#8221; Ortiz said to<a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/crowley-couple-fights-off-attempted-kidnapping-suspect/3272234/" target="_blank"> NBC5. </a><br>Carlos became suspicious when Bayse kept talking about his little girl.<br>&#8216;He started saying some other things that threw red flags up to me,&#8217; he said. &#8216;He starts saying things like, &#8221;that could be like Shelby, oh, that&#8217;s my truck&#8221;.<br>&#8216;Probably because he had a similar truck to mine. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">She said their daughter had not been left alone even for a second before the stranger tried to take her away in front of their eyes. <br>Paige quickly sprinted out of the house to help her husband stop the would-be kidnapper in his tracks.<br>&#8216;I was holding his arm then my wife, she had one arm on our kid,&#8217; Carlos said. &#8216;The other arm with the knife to his neck. Eventually, she was able to pull her out of his arms and runs inside. <br>Paige held the blade of her knife to the man&#8217;s neck, looked him in the eyes and told him she would kill him if he didn&#8217;t let her daughter go. <br>She was able to give deputies the make, model and tag number of the vehicle Bayse was driving. <br>The suspect refused to pull over when deputies tried to stop him on the road, which led to a high speed chase after he drove off, hit three patrol cars and almost struck a deputy from the Tarrant County Sheriff&#8217;s Office. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Authorities said he stopped several times, acting as if he would surrender and then continued running from deputies. Eventually he pulled into the parking lot of a grocery store and was taken into custody. <br>He was being held at Tarrant County Jail on three felony charges. His bond was set at $125,000.<br>Bayse has a criminal record after being hit with mail theft charges in Crowley in a February incident, according to Tarrant County court records. He was convicted on April 19 of one misdemeanor count and was sentenced to 10 days for stealing mail.<br></p>
