<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A British actress who accuses Roman Polanski of raping her sold a story about her life as a 14-year-old prostitute for £30,000, a French court has heard.<br>The interview by Charlotte Lewis, who is now 56, also contained lurid details about how she pursued the film director romantically, with the intention of becoming his mistress. While debunking the rape claim Polanski quoted the magazine, citing a 1999 News of the World interview with Lewis in which she was quoted as saying: “I wanted to be his mistress … I probably desired him more than he did me.”<br>The testament is key evidence in a libel trial against Polanski, 90, who denies attacking Charlotte Lewis , back in 1983.<br>Lewis has alleged the Franco-Polish film-maker sexually assaulted her in 1983 when she was 16 years old and in Paris for a casting meeting. She accused Polanski in 2010 of abusing her “in the worst possible way”, saying: “He took advantage of me and I have lived with the effects of his behavior ever since it occurred.”<br>Countering, Polanski&#8217;s attorneys told the Paris Correctional Court that Lewis never reported the attack to the police. Instead, she waited until 2010, when she made the claim during a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival.</p>

They called me a prostitute.’<br>But Stuart White, the British journalist who wrote the article, testified that he stands by its accuracy.<br>White, 77, told the court that it was written with her full cooperation, and told the story of how she became ‘a luxury call girl at fourteen’.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now defunct British tabloid News of the World was regularly accused of libel and fabricating quotes, was forced to close in 2011 after its employees were accused of phone hacking in pursuit of stories, but during the Lewis libel trial in Paris, former NW employee White said: ‘Ms Lewis and I discussed at length how best to reveal and write these new revelations.<br>‘Our intention, as I told her, was to be as compassionate as possible, and that I would write the story accordingly.’<br>White said: ‘I remember that she was satisfied with the way I had presented the story, making it clear she had been the victim of predators.’<br>According to White, in 2019 Lewis asked him to make a sworn statement saying he had fabricated the prostitute story. He refused. <br>White recalled saying: ‘Charlotte, if you think we fabricated this story, why did you wait twenty years to complain?<br>‘You could have sued News of the World the following week.’<br>Lewis replied that she had only read the article 10 years later – something White described as ‘absurd and incredible.’<br>White was the only witnessed summoned by the defense in the one-day libel trial, which ended close to midnight on Tuesday.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Polanski libel trial has now concluded, and judgement will be handed down on May 14.<br>Polanski used a 2019 interview with Paris March to describe the rape claim as a ‘heinous lie’. <br>He also produced a copy of the News of the World article, which quoted Lewis as saying: ‘I was fascinated by him, and I wanted to be his lover.’<br>Lewis disputed the accuracy of the quote and subsequently sued for defamation.<br>She told the court on Tuesday that the media coverage after she spoke out in 2010 had given her a “nervous breakdown”, and her then six-year-old son “had to change school because everybody read the articles”.<br>Despite his strenuous protestations Polanski refused to appear in his own defense, staying away from court, leaving his defense against allegations he vehemently denies instead, to his attorneys.<br>It was the first time that Polanski has faced court justice since running away from America in 1977 after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer. <br>Lewis was present in court. Her lawyer, Benjamin Chouai, before commencement of the trial said in a media interview: “Discrediting and defaming is an integral part of the Polanski system and this is what Charlotte Lewis is very bravely calling out.”<br>Delphine Meillet, the lawyer for Polanski holds that there was no defamation in the Paris Match article. “Polanski has the right to defend himself, as does the woman who accuses him,” she said.<br>Polanski remains a fugitive from American pedophile-sex justice after having sex with Geimer, then 13, in Hollywood after plying her with champagne. He&#8217;d fled to his home country of France, which does not have an extradition treaty with the USA.<br>.<br></p>
