Russian man opts to fight in Putin’s war after his conviction for ‘crucifying’ his girlfriend on a wooden plank and setting her on fire with an accelerant when ‘she ended their relationship’

An intimate partner violence survivor in Russia turned up in for the trial of her torturer bearing what would be extensive and lifelong scars from the horrific injuries she suffered after being nailed by her feet and hands to a wooden plank in a horror ‘crucifixion’ by her estranged boyfriend. The assailant then compounded her misery, dousing her with accelerant and before he set her on fire.Ā 
Recruitment manager Oksana Kuzmenko told a court how her lover had staged the crucifixion before dousing her body with gasoline and setting her alight when she ended their relationship, last year October, in Yekaterinburg, eastern Russia.
Kuzmenko, 40, suffered life-altering wounds after she ‘lit up like a candle’.
Her physical appearance completely changed following the brutal torture at the hands of her younger boyfriend.Ā

The assailant, OlegĀ Shchegolikhin, a 33-year-old a welder, was handed a 12 year sentenceĀ to be spent in a strict regime penal colony by a Russian court for attempted murder with ‘extreme cruelty’.
Ironically, in a bid to mitigate his restitution, the convict has volunteered for more violence by volunteering to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Following the practice by the current Russian government to pardon convicts who fight in the war, Shchegolikhin likely will not spend much time in jail, if at all.

In her testimony, the victim told the court how Shchegolikhin threatened to kill her in the car repair workshop where he worked in Yekaterinburg.
He reportedly ambushed Oksana near her home in Yekaterinburg and took her to a car repair workshop.
Recalling the chilling ordeal that happened in October 2023, Kuzmenko said: ‘He took off my boots, he took my left leg and hammered a nail into it.
‘And in my right leg he took something like a corkscrew and twisted this sharp object into my right leg,’ she continued.
WhileĀ Shchegolikhin carried out his evil ‘crucifixion’, he had been making threats to kill his victim as she lay helplessly nailed to a wooden plank.
‘He took out a cigarette and a lighter, and poured petrol [gasoline], so I lit up like a candle,’ she recounted.
The welder watched his girlfriend burn alive while smoking his cigarette. He then grabbed a fire extinguisher and putting out the flames.
But it was too late and the severe damage had been done.

After putting out the flames, Shchegolikhin peeled off the burnt skin from Kuzmenko’s right hand, leaving her with scars she will live with for the rest of her life.
He then ordered her to drive him to the city of Asbest. Suspecting her tormentor planned to kill her and hide her body in a forest while on the journey, Kuzmenko though injured and hurting, in a brave move decided to deliberately crash the car into another vehicle.
In the ensuing melee, Shchegolikhin abandoned her and fled the scene as police arrived.Ā

Torturer Shchegolikhin had launched his brutal attack on Kuzmenko after she ended their relationship. He expects to evade the strict regime penal colony to which he was sentenced by volunteering to fight for Russia against Ukraine

Following the attack,Ā Shchegolikhin ordered his girlfriend to drive him to Asbest. Fearing he wanted to dispose of her Kuzmenko deliberately crashed the car, forcing her assailant to flee to evade police

Following his conviction and sentencing Oleg Shchegolikhin [left], volunteered to fight instead in the war against Ukraine, and so is unlikely to spend much time in jail

Kuzmenko reported the hideous ordeal she had suffered to the attending police officers, which she said was followed by an hour long beating from her assailant.Ā 
The police report finding the victim in a ‘terrible condition,’ and transporting her to hospital where she was admitted in critical condition.
She was later diagnosed withĀ severe burns to the upper limbs, upper respiratory tract, neck, face, and buttocks.
She had deep wounds in her limbs from the nail and ‘corkscrew’. The hospital listed her condition as ‘grave.’
The victim told the court that from get go Shchegolikhin had hidden his past as a convict with previous sentences for hijacking, theft, battery, and drunk driving.

After the verdict, defense lawyer Olga Polishchuk said her client would appeal as he ‘never intended to kill her’ when he nailed her to a plank and set her ablaze.
She mentioned that, ‘Under interrogation and in court he always said: ‘I loved her’.’
As ShchegolikhinĀ prepares to appeal his conviction for attempted murder, he has applied for a scheme that enables him to receive a pardon from Putin after serving six months in his war.
‘He is going to the war,’ she said.
‘He wrote a statement to the Russian Army back in October.Ā Ā 
‘Taking part in the war, he would be able to make amends to her,’ she added.
