Mmutle, a Detective Warrant Officer, stationed at Nietverdint police station, at the time was separated from his wife, Motshegwa, as they were experiencing marital problems. Motshegwa Mmutle was also a police officer based at the Kopfontein Port of Entry, which links South Africa and Botswana.

Happier days for the Mmutle family: Prosecutors told Annius Mmutle that he was ‘supposed to protect his spouse and his family,’ particularly as he is a law enforcement officer, instead he killed his spouseÂ
The prosecution sought aggravated sentencing because this was premeditated murder.
The defendant was supposed to protect his spouse and his family, particularly as he is a law enforcement officer, instead he killed his spouse, the prosecutor told the court.Â
The state emphasized that the court must be the source of hope for the victims and community and protect the interest of public at all times , Mabale said.Â
The prosecutor emphasized that no compelling and substantial grounds warrants the court to deviate from prescribed minimum sentence, urging the imposition of the maximum of life imprisonment.
At sentencing the magistrate upbraided Mmutle for his lack of remorse, adding that his act of calling police after the killings does not count as a sign of remorse.
Violence is a scourge rife in the society and the defendant being a police officer knows better, the magistrate said.
