<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A young doctor in Philadelphia will spend nearly two years in county jail after she convicted for terrorizing a family in the most extreme fashion.<br>Amy Cohen, a 35-year-old an infectious-disease specialist, was accused of mounting an unhinged campaign of terror against her ex-boyfriend&#8217;s glamorous new lover and her family. She was convicted of after she tried to burn down the home of her romantic rival&#8217;s 99-year-old grandmother. <br>At the Montgomery County Courthouse on Wednesday, she and was sentenced to 11 to 23 months in jail. <br>Cohen, according to her attorney, &#8216;suffered a mental breakdown&#8217; after her ex found a new partner.<br>The physician embarked on stalking the woman&#8217;s relatives. In some instances she would leaving creepy fliers with images of her rival with crosses over her eyes.<br>The fliers threatened to &#8216;end the family&#8217; if they did not leave the state and accused her ex&#8217;s new partner of &#8216;promoting Islamophobia.&#8217;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The campaign of terror culminated in arson on November, 30, 2023, when Cohen set fire to the home of her rival&#8217;s grandmother. <br>The elderly homeowner was able to escape to safety only because the blaze was detected before it fully engulfed the structure. <br>Unfortunately for Cohen she was flagged as the the suspect and was arrested after her ex recognized her in surveillance footage of the arson.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The man at the center told police his ex-girlfriend had not taken their break-up well. Cohen he said, had been stalking him and his partner on social media, besides researching where the new woman in his life lived and worked. <br>Police executing a search warrant, found lighter fluid and copies of the stalking letters in the trunk of the suspect&#8217;s car. <br>Cohen an infectious-disease physician at Medical Specialist Association, following the arrest, had her medical license suspended.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cohen pled guilty to arson, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats, and related crimes in December. <br>Charges of attempted murder and assault were dismissed after Cohen completed six months of inpatient treatment at a mental health facility in Mississippi.<br>A psychologist who treated Cohen testified that she suffered from ADHD, borderline personality disorder, and anxiety since childhood and was abusing Adderall. <br>In 2023 was spiraling from working during the COVID pandemic and was in an &#8216;amphetamine-induced psychosis,&#8217; the psychologist said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At sentencing on Wednesday, Cohen&#8217;s lawyers prayed the court that their client should be spared time in prison time in favor of her rehabilitation. <br>Defense attorney John McMahon asked Montgomery County Court Judge Wendy Rothstein to release his client on probation, with credit for the time she spent in county jail after her arrest, and later stints at Norristown State Hospital and the out-of-state facility.<br>However, Judge Wendy Rothstein insisted Dr. Cohen must pay the consequences of her actions. <br>&#8216;The next step in your rehabilitation process is understanding there are consequences for your actions and accepting them,&#8217; Judge Rothstein said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before sentence was handed down, in her victim&#8217;s impact statement, the now 101-year-old grandmother told the court that she still asks about &#8216;the girl who tried to burn [her] house down.&#8217;<br>&#8216;Amy demonstrated a total disregard for human life, which is disgusting, knowing that she is a doctor,&#8217; the victim said.<br>Cohen, on her part, apologized to the victim and her family. <br>&#8216;I know me saying I’m deeply sorry doesn’t compensate for my actions, but I hope you are able to begin to heal,&#8217; the defendant conceded. </p>
