<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Three escaped prisoners from the eastern Caribbean island of Grenada who were accused of killing an elderly U.S. couple last year after hijacking their catamaran have been sentenced Wednesday. <br>After hijacking Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel&#8217;s boat, the men defiled, gagged and tossed the couple into the sea: in what the judge said it&#8217;s the &#8216;most heinous&#8217; crime she&#8217;s ever seen, adding that &#8216;it&#8217;s exposed a vacation danger that too many overlook.&#8217;<br>Sailor, Ron Mitchell, 31, who was accused of being the ringleader, received two life sentences on Wednesday, August 6, in the killings of Virginia couple Ralph Hendry, 66, and Kathy Brandel, 71, a year earlier.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Atiba Stanislaus, a 26-year-old farmer sentenced to 60 years in prison on the charge of manslaughter and nearly 18 years for the rape of Brandel, among other sentences, for a variety of crimes, including kidnapping.<br>Trevon Robertson, a 20-year-old unemployed man, was sentenced to 56 years in prison for manslaughter and other sentences for different crimes, according to local media reports.<br>According to local media reports prosecutors said the men bound and gagged the couple before throwing them overboard, with Mitchell accused of steering the yacht over Hendry.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The American couple were killed by the escaped prisoners who commandeered the couple’s yacht in the Caribbean. One of the three men allegedly raped Kathy Brandel, before the trio killed her and her husband, Ralph Hendry, on their sailboat sometime around in February 18, 2024, Island authorities said.<br>The husband and wife were thrown overboard, gagged and bound. The two bodies were never found.<br>Police at the time said the men had escaped on February 18, from the South Saint George Police Station.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They hijacked the catamaran Simplicity on the following day and then headed to nearby St. Vincent, where they were arrested, according to authorities.<br>The bodies of the couple have not been found since they were last seen near their docked catamaran, the Simplicity, in St. George’s, Grenada, the same day the three men allegedly broke out of a police holding cell on the island.<br>Police believe the escapees hijacked the sailboat while the couple were on board. The Simplicity was found anchored and deserted days later. Large amounts of blood were found on the ransacked boat, but Hendry and Brandel were nowhere to be found. <br>Police believe the hijackers threw their bodies overboard while sailing to St. Vincent.<br>The trio of Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, who were originally being held on robbery charges before their escape on Feb 18, were arrested in St. Vincent on Feb. 21, and deported back to Grenada for trial, where they were all charged with two counts of capital murder as well as escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and two counts of kidnapping,</p>
