<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A Minnesota mother-of-three has been convicted of stabbing one of her children to death, setting her house on fire and leaving her second child to suffocate inside while she fled with her third child. <br>On Thursday, a federal jury found Jennifer Marie Stately, 37, guilty of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of arson after a two-and-a-half-week trial. <br>Stately was accused of committed the crimes on March 15, 2024, at her home in Red Lake Nation, an Indian reservation about 270 miles north of Minneapolis.<br>According to the charging documents, six-year-old Remi Stately was fatally stabbed by his mother before she left his younger brother, Tristan Stately, five, to die of carbon monoxide poisoning inside the home she set on fire. <br>Stately investigators had used gasoline and lighter fluid to ignite three separate fires in her house. Two were lit at the home&#8217;s two exits, trapping Tristan inside. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The mother fled with her three-year-old, prompting authorities in Minnesota to issue an AMBER alert for the missing child several hours after she took flight. <br>Within an hour of the abducted child notification going out mother and child were spotted by a motorist about 150 miles south of Red Lake in Todd County.<br>A large response consisting of officers with the Minnesota State Patrol, the Todd County Sheriff’s Department and the Long Prairie Police Department responded to Stately&#8217;s location and placed her in custody.<br>Court <a href="https://lawandcrime.com/crime/no-chance-at-survival-mom-stabbed-6-year-old-son-to-death-then-set-fire-to-homes-exits-so-her-5-year-old-son-could-not-escape/">records</a> show that three-year-old child was suffering from severe signs of abuse and neglect. <br>The toddler had severe body odor because he had not been changed or washed for days.<br>He also had sores on his face that were bleeding or scabbed over, and he had additional scabs all over the soles of his feet that made it impossible for him to stand due to the pain. He also had teeth so rotted that he could not eat properly. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stately was booked into the Todd County Jail while awaiting trial, which began in February, almost two years after she committed the murders. <br>She was arraigned on two counts of first-degree premeditated murder, two counts of murder in the course of committing child abuse, one count of murder in the course of committing arson and one count of arson. <br>Prosecutors in Todd County opted to dismiss several state child abuse and neglect charges that the mother was already facing, so she could be tried in federal court.<br>She entered a not guilty plea as her defense counsel employed an insanity defense. Jurors rejected defense arguments and convicted Stately for murder.<br>Sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, but she is facing capital punishment or life in prison without the possibility of parole. </p>
