<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A father-of-four who faked a suicide &#8216;scene&#8217; in an attempt to avoid justice for the rape and murder of his estranged wife shook his head in the dock as he was convicted today.<br>Michael Thompson, a 56-year-old former amateur boxer from Northampton, in the East Midlands region of England, described by prosecutors as a &#8216;Coercive and controlling&#8217; husband, attacked Kimberley Thompson, 43, a civil servant and award-winning basketball coach, in the middle of the night last August. <br>The estranged couple who shared two children were sleeping in different rooms in their home pending the finalization of their divorce.<br>Jurors heard he had been watching sex videos while &#8216;stewing&#8217; over Kimberly&#8217;s new relationship and her demand for an inflated divorce settlement &#8211; but were not told that Thompson&#8217;s former partner had died in suspicious circumstances in 2000. <br>A jury heard the more recent of the suspicious death of a partner, Thompson almost got away with his wife&#8217;s murder after police believed the &#8216;charade&#8217; created by Thompson that the mother of two of his children had overdosed on pills washed down with spirits after the pair had consensual sex. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the end of the the six-week trial, during which the defendant did not take the stand in his own defense, the jurors deliberated for 11 hours and 38 minutes to return the guilty verdict on four charges.<br>Thompson who wore a bracelet in court with the words &#8216;Never Give Up&#8217;, raised his eyebrows and mouthed &#8216;wow&#8217; as the verdict of guilty of murder was delivered. <br>Next he was pronounced guilty of rape. Thompson placing his hand to his head, again mouthed &#8216;wow&#8217; and shook his head. <br>He was also convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice. <br>Sentencing has been scheduled for July 14.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the convictions, in the death of Kimberly Thompson, police re-examined the circumstances around the death of the mother of Thompson&#8217;s elder two children 25 years earlier.<br>Rhonda Anderson died after she was found electrocuted in the bath – an electric radio in the water beside her – in July 2000. <br>The coroner ruled her death an accident, resulting from the electronic device falling into the water.<br>Last December, Northamptonshire Police announced it had launched a fresh murder probe into 29-year-old Anderson&#8217;s death after receiving &#8216;new information&#8217; in the case. <br>On Wednesday police revealed that Thompson was arrested on suspicion of murder in the death of Anderson. However, that investigation has been closed due to &#8216;insufficient evidence&#8217;.<br>On August 9, 2025, mother-of-two Kimberly Thompson, a former East Midlands coach of the year, was found dead at the couple&#8217;s home in Northampton, where the estranged pair were sleeping in separate bedrooms whilst as their divorce was being finalized.<br>Initially staged to look like suicide, East Midlands police declared the case a murder investigation three days later and Micheal Thompson was arrested. A month later he was charged with rape and murder.<br>Nottingham Crown Court heard Thompson stalked and snooped on his estranged spouse, who was on the brink of moving to her new home.<br>On the night she was was raped and murdered, Michael authored and sent messages purporting to be from his Kimberly suggesting she had been drinking. However, those incriminating texts were replete with typos that he would commonly make, but she would not. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He also moved bottles of gin and vodka into the downstairs bedroom where her body was found, as well as empty strips of the painkiller co-codamol..<br>First responders and police also found the couple&#8217;s wedding portrait along with a montage of Kim&#8217;s late sister, who committed suicide, on the death bed..<br>Jurors heard that prior to dialing 999 claiming &#8216;I can&#8217;t wake my wife up&#8217;, Thompson had sent himself a text message from Kimberly&#8217;s phone suggesting she wanted sex.<br>The former bouncer, who had been working in the auto trade, told police he went downstairs, found Kim in a &#8216;merry&#8217; mood and they had sex. He then returned to his own room at 3.10am. <br>Their teenage children &#8211; a daughter, 18 and son, 16, but were living &#8216;separate lives but under the same roof&#8217; at the time of their mother&#8217;s death.<br>Debunking Thompson&#8217;s version prosecutor Miranda Moore KC said: &#8216;The prosecution case is she did not send (the message).&#8217;<br>The text Moore said, was diversionary, to &#8216;cover up&#8217; the murder. An attempt to cover up the fact he had raped Kimberly. <br>The packet of painkiller and bottles of alcohol were staged to point at suicide.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Thompson told police he discovered his wife lying in an unnatural position when he went to get a drink. As he turned her over, vomit came out of her mouth, he said.<br>Responding officers initially &#8216;swallowed&#8217; the impression created by scene as staged by Thompson the prosecutor told the court. <br>As first responders &#8216;took the view that this was a drink and drugs incident. A suicide attempt or an unfortunate accident, vital evidence, including a glass containing yellow liquid, wasn&#8217;t seized and Thompson was allowed to clean up the crime scene. <br>The fabric of lies blew up as toxicology later proved that the deceased woman had not been drinking. She also very low levels of codeine and paracetamol in her system.<br>A pathologist concluded that cause of death asphyxia. She had been smothered, dying of external airway obstruction.<br>The court also heard that prior to her death Kimberly Thompson had told friends of &#8216;physical, emotional abuse and controlling behaviour&#8217; by her husband dating back years and she once sought help from a domestic violence unit. <br>According the testimony of a childhood friend Kimberly who met Thompson in 2001 when she was 19 and married him five years later, had doubts about the union even on the weekend of her bachelorette party<br>A second friend testified that Kim had confided in her and another friend about physical assaults and a rape Thompson had inflicted on her after she had an affair. &#8216;If anything happens to me. Please know it was him&#8217;, Kim told them.<br></p>
