<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A top prosecutor in Missouri was hit with a &#8216;writ of quo warranto&#8217; this week by the Missouri Attorney General&#8217;s Office alleging she abused her office to have inappropriate relationships. <br>Ray County prosecutor Camille Johnston, 46, according to the filing to remove her from the role, had a romantic relationships with a defense attorney representing several criminal defendants in cases prosecuted by Ray County.<br>She also allegedly had an affair with an illegal immigrant, identified by <a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/investigations/missouri-ag-removes-ray-county-prosecutor-camille-johnston" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" class="">KSHB </a>as Juan David Gutierrez, who is accused of sexually assaulting another woman. <br>As stated in the filing, Gutierrez was being prosecuted in Ray County, when Johnston allegedly gave her vehicle to the defendant, aiding him abscond to Florida. She then proceeded to Florida on vacation with the fugitive. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Besides the two ethically challenged alleged affairs, Johnson also carried out a sexual relationship with another defendant in a criminal case, and fired an employee who discovered it.<br>The filing claimed Johnson has an &#8216;obvious appearance of a conflict of interest&#8217; in her handling of a number of cases, meaning she has &#8216;forfeited the office of prosecuting attorney.&#8217; <br>After Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed documents to remove Johnston from office on Thursday, a judge swiftly approved a preliminary order suspending her. <br>The first details of Johnston&#8217;s alleged inappropriate relationship with Gutierrez emerged in September last year, when it was reported that the prosecutor was his girlfriend when he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in 2019. <br>Gutierrez was hit with criminal charges of sodomy and attempted sodomy. <br>The victim in that case, who remained anonymous, in an interview said she was &#8216;absolutely shocked&#8217; to learn of the relationship. <br>The case subsequently was handed over to the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 2020 when the conflict of interest with Johnston was discovered.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During this time, Johnston was also allegedly aware that Gutierrez was a citizen of Mexico who had been in the US illegally since 2019, the writ of quo warranto filing stated. <br>The prosecution against Gutierrez slowed as investigators said they could not locate the accused person. However, Johnston allegedly helped him abscond to Mississippi by giving him her truck. <br>In court documents in a civil case filed by Gutierrez&#8217;s alleged victim, it was claimed that Johnston transferred the title of the vehicle into Gutierrez&#8217;s name before he took the truck down to Florida. <br>Johnston &#8216;subsequently went to Florida to vacation&#8217; with Gutierrez, the filing said. <br>Gutierrez was eventually arrested in Ohio in 2024, and his trial for sexual assault was set to begin July 13, but it was rescheduled for September. </p>

She filed a defamation lawsuit against the investigator who uncovered the relationship. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Johnston denied the allegations related to Gutierrez when they were reported last year, and she filed a defamation lawsuit against the investigator who said he uncovered it. <br>She allegedly claimed that she &#8216;took no action to aid&#8217; Gutierrez, had &#8216;no involvement in the investigation&#8217; and &#8216;was not aware of criminal charges against Gutierrez at the time she sold him the vehicle.&#8217; <br>In another of Johnston&#8217;s alleged inappropriate relationships, the quo warranto filing alleges she had a romantic interest in a licensed attorney in Ray County, identified only in the document by the initials TT. <br>The caveat in the filing is that the same attorney &#8216;has represented, and continues to represent, numerous criminal defendants against criminal charges filed by Respondent in her role as prosecutor&#8217;, the filing said. <br>Johnston allegedly was still overseeing cases that involved TT, even though she was required to disqualify herself and seek a special prosecutor in any such cases, the filing claimed.<br>When one of her employees in the prosecutor&#8217;s office discovered the affair, in retaliation that employee claims, she was fired. <br>In a third alleged inappropriate relationship, Johnson also allegedly had an affair with a man accused of domestic violence, identified by initials CW in the filing. <br>The case against CW would also have been overseen by Johnston&#8217;s office, but she was disqualified and a special prosecutor was put on the case when local law enforcement became aware of her relationship. <br>According to the quo warranto filing, Johnston then withheld information about the defendant and the affair from courts, Ray County staff, and the victim in the case. <br>Staff in Johnston&#8217;s office alleged that she created a hostile work environment through &#8216;fits of anger and tantrums&#8217;, verbally berating employees and engaging in romantic relationships that resulted in conflicts of interest.<br>The Missouri Attorney General&#8217;s Office said in its filing that it believes Johnston likely committed several crimes through the inappropriate relationships, including acceding to corruption and hindering prosecution. </p>
