<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A 35-year-old was declined treatment when arrived in distress at a busy downtown in New Jersey emergency room, a half mile from his home. The Patient died after collapsing just feet from the E.R. The fallout reportedly has led to serious financial implications for the hospital.<br>A nurse allegedly dismissed Jerome White&#8217;s desperate breathing problems when he arrived on June 3, 2020, by claiming he regularly came to the hospital and &#8216;pretends to be sick,.&#8217;<br>White reportedly, was screaming that he could not breathe after leaving Cooper University Hospital in Camden on the night of June 3, 2020, as sheriff&#8217;s officers watched his condition rapidly deteriorate outside.<br>White, who had a long history of severe asthma, had initially received treatment inside the hospital before being discharged during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a <a href="https://www.nj.com/camden/2026/08/he-begged-for-help-but-this-nj-hospital-denied-him-his-family-got-15m-in-a-secret-payout.html">police report</a><a href="https://www.nj.com/camden/2026/08/he-begged-for-help-but-this-nj-hospital-denied-him-his-family-got-15m-in-a-secret-payout.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">.</a><br>Late on the night of June 3, 2020, White was thrown out of the emergency room after initially receiving treatment, with a nurse complaining that he “comes here all the time and pretends to be sick,” according to a police report.But though White was “screaming that he could not breathe,” the frantic man was barred from returning to the hospital.<br>However, during his last visit six years ago, officers concerned over the obvious distress of the frantic man, twice approached hospital personnel about White&#8217;s condition.<br>On the second occasion, Officer Pierre Buchaillot specifically told an on-duty nurse that White appeared to be struggling.<br>&#8216;The nurse advised Officer Buchaillot that Mr. White comes here all the time and pretends to be sick,&#8217; the incident report states.<br>Moments later, White collapsed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the officer&#8217;s account the distressed man initially &#8216;plopped to the ground&#8217; and rolled around before coming to rest on his stomach.<br>White the report states, then fell silent as the officers continued speaking to him and tried to calm him.But when cops attempted to move him from the pavement to a nearby bench, they discovered his body had gone limp and his lips were turning blue.<br>Officer Buchaillot raced back into the hospital for help, and medical staff rushed outside and began treating White.<br>By the time he was placed onto a stretcher and taken back through the emergency room doors, he had stopped breathing, according to the report.<br>White never recovered from the catastrophic loss of oxygen to his brain. <br>He died at Cooper on June 19, some 16 days after he had first walked into the hospital seeking help for the breathing crisis that claimed his life.<br>His death certificate listed anoxic encephalopathy &#8211; brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen, and cardiac arrest as his cause of death. <br>It also recorded his longstanding asthma, which was capable of triggering life-threatening attacks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The extraordinary circumstances surrounding White&#8217;s death would later result in a previously undisclosed <a href="https://www.nj.com/camden/2026/08/he-begged-for-help-but-this-nj-hospital-denied-him-his-family-got-15m-in-a-secret-payout.html">$15 million wrongful-death settlement</a> for his family.<br>No lawsuit ever reached court. Instead, the agreement was negotiated privately after White&#8217;s relatives threatened legal action against Cooper University Teaching Hospital and Camden County, leaving much of what happened inside the emergency department that night shielded from public scrutiny.<br>According to estate records, $12 million of the settlement was apparently paid by Cooper Hospital, while Camden County contributed $3 million.<br>The agreement contained no admission of wrongdoing.<br>&#8216;It strikes me as an uncommonly large settlement,&#8217; Sara Rosenbaum, professor emerita of health law and policy at George Washington University, told NJ.com. &#8216;So the hospital&#8217;s behavior must have been reprehensible.&#8217;<br>&#8216;It had to have been quite a flagrant violation,&#8217; she added.<br>Rosenbaum said the circumstances described in the records appeared to constitute a violation of the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, which imposes obligations on hospitals when people arrive seeking emergency treatment.<br>Yet precisely what happened before White was sent away remains unclear.<br>Camden County said its officers were subsequently investigated by internal affairs and cleared, with none disciplined.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8216;The officers went and rendered aid and got Mr. White back into the E.D.,&#8217; county spokesman Dan Keashan told NJ.com. &#8216;That&#8217;s basically what the incident report says.&#8217;<br>The county also maintained that its officers used no force against White and denied violating his rights.<br>The tragedy unfolded during one of the darkest periods of the pandemic, when New Jersey hospitals were confronting enormous numbers of desperately ill COVID patients and emergency departments faced extraordinary pressure.<br>The settlement included a confidentiality agreement that attorney Jarad Silverstein, who represented White&#8217;s family, described in a legal filing as &#8216;critical&#8217; to reaching the 2021 deal.<br>Silverstein&#8217;s law firm received $5 million from the settlement- a fee backed by the family and approved by a Superior Court judge.<br>Some $10 million was placed into a trust benefiting White&#8217;s son, who was only 14 when his father died. </p>
