<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At least two people were killed and four others were injured, including two police officers, when a gunman opened fire at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building.<br>Minneapolis police received a call at 4.36pm on Wednesday that one person had been shot at Loring Towers, an affordable housing community, a Minneapolis Police spokesperson said at a news conference, Soon, other calls came in reporting additional gunfire.<br>When police then arrived at the scene at 4.39pm, they found one victim dead and several others suffering from gunshot wounds.<br>According to the report, officers then tracked the shots to an upper floor, where they were confronted by a &#8216;haze&#8217; that limited their visibility. <br>Two officers were then shot, while a third sustained a non-life threatening injury.<br>One of those officers was shot in the stomach, while the other sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg<a href="https://kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/large-police-presence-in-downtown-minneapolis" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="">.</a> <br>Seven injured people were rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center,where one person was later pronounced dead.<br>The officer who was shot in the stomach was said to be in stable condition following surgery.<br>The suspect, a tenant who reportedly, was facing eviction processes was also killed at the scene.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Witnesses identified the gunman as 35-year-old Carlton Johnson II, a Minneapolis based content creator.<br>Court records show that the Loring Tower building’s management company was in the process of evicting Johnson from his 9th-floor unit, and a hearing was scheduled for Sept. 11 in the eviction case.<br>According to the complaint filed by the management company, Johnson’s lease was supposed to be terminated in June after he assaulted another resident, openly displayed a firearm, and threatened to kill someone.<br>Records show six instances of Johnson disturbing residents dating back to January. However, he was given a second chance on the condition that he would conceal his firearm while on the property.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One witness <a href="https://www.startribune.com/shooting-multiple-victims-minneapolis-loring-park/601885547?taid=6a98a2ab3375640001f2439a&;utm_campaign=trueanthem&;utm_medium=social&;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener" class="">recounts</a> hearing gunfire, then seeing a property manager on the ground as well as two more people shot on the ground.<br>&#8216;And then I saw them bring an officer out that got shot in the leg.&#8217;<br>Strong said he is still trying to &#8216;process&#8217; what he witnessed. Umecua Agnew, a resident of the building, also said she was in the elevator on the first floor when the shots rang out.<br>&#8216;It was three adults and one child in the elevator, we were all together and when we got to the first floor, it was when we heard the massive shooting,&#8217; she said.<br>At that point, Agnew said she and another woman grabbed the child and went to her eighth-floor apartment, from where she heard more gunfire. <br>Another resident eventually led her out &#8216;because I wasn&#8217;t gonna leave, I was terrified that I might get caught in the shooting in the hallway so bad I didn&#8217;t want to leave.&#8217;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before going on a shooting spree Wednesday, Carlton Johnson had a history of long running history of run ins with the law. His priors include 34 separate criminal cases in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.<br>Most of the cases involved traffic violations. But Johnson was also charged in two assaults and two misdemeanor drug cases.<br>His first conviction came in 2012, when he pled guilty to violating a contact order in a domestic abuse case. He was received probation and a $50 fine.<br>In 2018, Johnson was charged with domestic assault after his sister told police that he threw her around her apartment one night while he was drunk, causing her to collide with furniture<br>The victim complained that he also kicked the door open when she tried to march him out of the apartment. <br>Johnson also hinted that he had a gun in his car, telling her he was “not afraid to shoot people in the face,” according to the charging document. <br>The domestic assault charge was dropped after Johnson agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor property damage. <br>He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, but 86 days of the sentence were stayed under the terms of his probation agreement.<br>One former neighbor at Loring Tower building said Johnson was fairly social in the building, drinking and hanging out outside with some of the neighbors. The former neighbor said Johnson who recently obtained a permit to carry, was embroiled in a child custody dispute and his car was recently repossessed.<br>&#8220;He was fighting people every day, every damn day,&#8221; Derrick Thompson said. &#8220;He lost everything.”</p>
