Five people were killed and 21 others were injured in a brazen daylight drive-by mass shooting near the West Texas cities of Midland and Odessa on Saturday, as a gunman drove on the highways and streets opening fire on residents, motorists and shoppers, the authorities said.
The attacks terrified a region with a combined population of 263,000 at the start of Labor Day weekend. Police officers and state troopers tried to keep drivers off the highways.
Chief Michael Gerke of the Odessa Police Department said at a news conference on Saturday evening that the gunman, a male in his mid-30s, was dead, and that three law enforcement were shot. He did not give a motive, but said that the attack began as a traffic stop.
The shooter was shot and killed by police in the parking lot of the Cinergy movie theater in Odessa on Saturday.
The incident began with an attempted traffic stop by a Texas Depart of Public Safety officer on Saturday at about 4.17pm ET.
The fleeing suspect shot the officer, hijacked as US Postal Service mail truck and fired at random motorists along Interstate 20 before being taken down at the theater, police said.
Shocking movie goers witnessed police confronting the suspect outside of the theater and engaging in a shootout.

“A subject (possibly 2) is currently driving around Odessa shooting at random people,” Odessa Police said in an Facebook post at the time of the shootings.
“At this time there are multiple gunshot victims. The suspect just hijacked a US mail carrier truck.”
Police in the neighbouring city of Midland said: “We believe there are two shooters in two separate vehicles. The two vehicles in question are: gold/white small Toyota truck and a USPS Postal Van. Please stay away from these areas and stay indoors.”
They later posted: “It has been confirmed that the active shooter was shot and killed at the Cinergy [cinema complex] in Odessa. There is no active shooter at this time. All agencies are investigating reports of possible suspects.”
